Title: [CLOSED] Win a Butterfly Labs Bitforce Single
Post by: jamesg on April 28, 2012, 12:13:59 AM
Hello fellow bitcoiners,

Off the back of the successful raffle of a 50Gh 1 week mining contract, I am proud to offer a new raffle to all of my fellow mining enthusiasts!

Welcome to the Butterfly Labs Bitforce Single (http://www.butterflylabs.com/products/) raffle!

You read that right. I am ready to raffle one of my BFL singles away. Each ticket is only .25 BTC each!

Imagine, turning .25 BTC into a Butterfly Labs Bitforce single, a return of at least 480 times the cost of a single ticket.

So you’re probably wondering, “how can I verify that gigavps has a single to raffle off?”

My fifteen singles hashing away -> http://bit.ly/Ix3ktV
Gigavps’ farm monitoring page (all the singles are on rig 100) -> http://bit.ly/IxUZns

Rules of the contest:

  • The odds of winning this raffle is 1 / (total # of tickets sold)
  • This raffle will end on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 5pm EST.
  • You may purchase as many tickets as you like.
  • Whether buying a single ticket or bulk tickets, each ticket will have its own ticket number and therefore a unique hash.
  • The only piece of information you need to submit is your email address. This will be hashed so it will not be given out to the public.
  • The raffle will be decided by:
    • We will combine the SHA256 hash of each email address with the hash of your ticket number and the first block hash to be found after the raffle ends. Here is an example:
    • sha(sha(email) + sha(ticketNumber) + hashOfBlockFound)
    • The lowest hash wins!
  • Once the results of the raffle have been verified, the single will be shipped to the new owner within 48 hours.

Enjoy and good luck!

Best regards,
gigavps

Q/A

Q: Will the BFL warranty of 6 months transfer?
A: Whoever wins the single will have my full support in dealing with BFL should anything happen to the single.

Q: Rev 1, Rev 2 or Rev 3 unit?
A: It is up to the winner. I have no real preference.

Q: When is the Mini-Rig raffle?
A: Never. :)

6 days left before the lucky winner of the BFL bitforce single is chosen!

What are you going to do with your new single?

What do all but 2 of your BFL's look like their powered down (but still displaying a mH) ?

The first two lines are 5870s. :)

The other 15 are the singles. I have to use a special utility to get the stats for the singles so a lot of stats are missing for them.

345 Tickets have been purchased so far. What are you going to do with your new BFL single?
A minor issue - the block found after the raffle ends may have a timestamp before the end and a block found before the raffle ends may have a timestamp after the end ... (both are possible)

If it makes you feel better, we can do it this way:

1. Close the raffle buy buttons.
2. Compile the list of purchasers and tickets into hashes.
3. Post the list to pastebin.com
4. Declare the next block to have a time stamp after the pastebin.com post to be the block used to find the winner.

How does this sound?

How about: if you want to be completely random, you could say e.g. the 3rd block to have a timestamp on or after the designated 5pm
i.e. look at the timestamp of each block in order and the 3rd one (in block order) that has a timestamp after 5pm (your time)
VERY unlikely for that to happen before 5pm

Congrats, that's good going in 1 day or so, say with an average 10% discount on ticket sales price then that's about 92 BTC or $454 atm pulled in so far & the forum now showing adverts for it too I see, you should cover the Single's plus ad's costs in no time at this rate

Raffles can only be done by charitable/non-profit organizations. In Florida, in particular, you can not require payment to enter any raffle. Some organizations get around this by asking for a recommended donation, but no payment can officially be required.

I'll bet that if you look into it, you will probably find that the law applies to raffles where tickets are sold for "money", I.E. USD. I doubt the government will give 2 shits about what they view as a raffle that is denominated in "internet funny money".

Either way I am going to look into what it takes to comply with all local, state and federal regulations before continuing with another raffle.

We will conclude this raffle with a winner. The winner will get a BFL single in days instead of 12 weeks, which is how long i waited.

Hi Ilovebitcoins,

Ticket numbers are based off of when your ticket was purchased in relation to the other orders. All tickets will be posted right after 5pm on Friday and before we decide what block will create the final hash.

Best,

All wrong, I'll use it for:
    Packet integrity verification
    MonteCarlo Calculation support
    Custom contracted functions

There's also some 2 step SHA256 block hash functionality on it, and rumors has it that somebody used it for some sort of mining operation, but hey, nothing beats MonteCarlo simulations!  ;D ;D ;D

Ya GigaVPS thank you for doing such a lottery. I think this is a great way to get newbies like myself mining. The network could be strengthened by running these all the time. I wish BFL would do raffles like this. I mean you have made the money to pay for a new BFL unit already so it's not like you lost money on the deal. I think you have made money as well as the last raffle but it is fun for people who cannot afford to spend tons of cash on mining equipment. I would love to become a miner but I cannot afford to drop 500-1000 on mining equipment. I like the FPGA models just for the fact all you need is a small weak ass PC to run it.

Anyways thanks for answering my question as well.

Rules of the contest:
  • The raffle will be decided by:
    • We will combine the SHA256 hash of each email address with the hash of your ticket number and the first block hash to be found after the raffle ends. Here is an example:
    • sha(sha(email) + sha(ticketNumber) + hashOfBlockFound)
    • The lowest hash wins!
If you find the first sha256 collision ever, will you give both winners a single?  :P

The two winner would need to split it in half.  ;)

Bought a few myself. I've been trying to decide between a BFL single colo'd somewhere and a portable solar-powered ZTEX unit I can take with me. If I win this, I'll do both! :)

Total ticket sales is probably not the right metric to be discussing because their are costs involved including the purchase price of the single and having it shipped to me. There is also the cost of shipping the single to it's new home. That said, the raffle does have a positive ROI but that will be changed quite a bit depending on where the single is shipped to.

Just picked up another batch of 20

Maybe I can continue my lucky streak!

At this point my odds are better than they were in the 50Gh/s raffle.

And FYI I used the proceeds of that win to pick up 3 more 5970's and a nice Bitcoin polo shirt from CryptoAnarchy!

Plus a few left over to enter this one!

Good luck to all!!

wow, so you made about BTC 250 in tickets. good price to sell a bfl single for, I must say. well, to be fair, it might've gone the other way, too.

You are forgetting discounted tickets which make up a substantial portion of total ticket sales. None the less, this raffle will be profitable.

Thats kinda sketchy the guy said he bought 314 tickets and said now giga knows which block to choose. I am not saying anything wrong is going on at this point but I really did not like how he said it was gonna be private to a via PM. I trust and respect giga so hopefully this thing goes off without a hitch.

However I will be really skeptical if that person wins. What are other people's feelings? Also I don't know he is going to win because I already won. LOL!  ;D

Positive thinking plus my lucky smoke equals positive results. Not to mention my user name is Ilovebitcoins. I really figured that name would have been taken already.

The method of choosing the winner guarantees that the pick is random. It uses a block hash from the future, which cannot be computed ahead of time, since it is a random number. See the OP for details.

reeses was just joking, don't take it too seriously. If he really was cheating in some way, he wouldn't have bought over 100 BTC worth of tickets. ;)

reeses sense of humor is sometimes a little over the top. Per the rules of the raffle, only after a list of the tickets is posted will the block number be selected that will create the final hash for the ticket.

... Tickets have been purchased so far. What are you going to do with your new BFL single?

Well obviously I'm going to raffle it away the moment that it arrives, you've sold 1,200 tickets so 300 BTC minus say 10% discount on average = 270 * $5.15 = $1,390 & that's plenty for 2 brand new Singles with shipping plus plenty more left over once this finishes, beats mining with it but even at these poor odds I'm going in now for a block of 60 tickets for myself & a friend - I must be crazy but I'm having a good week  so WTH

OK folks. Thing will happen in the order below just like the last raffle.

1. 5pm arrives
2. We shut down all purchase buttons
3. We publish the hashed emails with ticket numbers and ticket hashes
4. We declare the block hash that will become the third part of the final hash for each ticket
5. Block arrives
6. Publish the results with the block hash and final hash without determining a winner
7. Allow third parties to declare which final hash is the winner
8. Verify third party results

This time I will put *IMPORTANT MESSAGE* on any message from me in this thread that pertains to figuring out something about winning this raffle.

WOOOOOT :D

I won ^___^

I didn't see that coming O_o

Buying 60 tickets pays off.
Apparently it did, indeed :P

It's actually a good thing people in the IRC channel were talking about it, or I might've missed it :P I nearly didn't buy any since the expected return was about half of the cost :P

And here it is having just arrived :D

It's a revision 3, with the heatpipes and the extra cooling block :)

Sadly, I can't test it yet: I don't have an adapter for the American plug. The power block itself can run on the voltage here, I just can't connect it. (Unless I would grab my soldering iron :D)

Thanks, gigavps! It's awesome ;D

I'm sure you already thought of this, but just in case, I thought I might mention a few places to check ...

The power lead from the wall to the plugpack is not uncommon.
e.g. Sony items that I have, with the same lead: PS3, PSP charger, PS2, PSOne, BD Player
I've also got a few external USB HDD enclosures with the same lead (I used this for mine, I'm in Aus)
(and I think even an old VCR I have, has that lead)

Yeah, I found a canon batterypack charger that had it, which I'm using at the moment. Most of the rest of yesterday was bughunting; it seems the thermal paste is not the greatest, and the trip might have had some influence: It's not stable anymore on stock firmware. It seems to run mostly without throttling up to the 816 MHash/sec firmware.
I'll put proper thermal paste on it when I have time, and see if that improves things.

I got mine from antirack who decided he had more than he needed :)

I also had a similar problem with it throttling when I first set it up.
(most likely caused by the courier)
In my case I ended up just letting it run overnight and by morning it was OK.
(most likely it was the heat sink contact and the heat of running for 8 hours resolved it?)
Though, local temperature was ~20C during the day that day, but a lot less that night (and my garage is cooler too since it is underground) and that cool night may also have had something to do with it.

Anyway there is a thread about throttling issues that may be helpful:

Thanks. I applied new thermal paste today (pics (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=60586.msg916922#msg916922)), which didn't really help. I then found that the highest-speed firmware actually /does/ work, whereas a lower one doesn't. Weird stuff. It's hashing at a good rate now though, I suppose I should screw everything back together properly :P
