Woah, awesome. Prototype ready for January too, that's pretty quick.

What if they produce something before the completed Ethereum client is available? Could they steal Ethereum's thunder?

I'm also wondering whether this is good for Etheruem or if the fork will overshadow the original too much. The Adept prototype ready in January won't be publicly available though, just for demonsrating at trade shows like CES. Overall I'm think at the moment that this will be good for Etheruem.

That doesn't mean IBM is making their own cryptocurrency. IBM is probably forking it for their "internet of things" blockchain.

Yes, that is what they are doing.

Satoshi's blockchain invention is more important than actual Bitcoin itself.  Decentralization of programming and decentralizing servers = cost saving mechanism.

True Bitcoin's cost saving mechanism is like $680 million a year but I think this can be tweaked to made cheaper.  Alternatively, especially for larger companies like IBM, $680 million might still be cheaper than their current operating expenses.  IBM has an operating expense in the tens of billions and blockchain technology from Bitcoin or Ethereum can likely drive that number down.

Sounds good. Decentralization of servers is a real thing and its going down ASAP.

It looks more like IBM could end up creating something like Maidsafe..

IBM's blockchain would probably still resemble a coin as how else are they going to pay people to host their decentralized servers?

Does anyone know if the Etherium guys are going to stagger their releasing of the source code? In other words, will IBM be able to make a full fork that contains all the same features?

Forking something that doesn't even exist yet. Good job.

IBM "forked" the PC in 1982-83...
People barely remember what happened before them...
And Google "forked" the search engine in 1998-99.

Only a matter of time before corporations with real resources take over the Crypto Space.

Before you guys get all excited, pls know that IBM has had hundreds of R&D projects (based on open source software) that have eventually failed.  This could easy be one of those internal R&D projects that fades into obscurity.

I know, I used to work there.  Their internal failure rate is fairly high.  Which is why the acquire way more technology solutions than they home grow.

Yes - this is it.  Coke machines that know when to restock or a million other things.  Not a currency.

Ethereum has a working codable prototype & has since pre-funding.

Absolutely.  But they do plan on having it functioning for CES is my understanding.

Very good point. I had a friend who worked there and he told me how for a while they were really into Second Life. LOL

Even if they fail to create a successful product they may develop some interesting bits of code that others can use along the way.

Ethereum is not available yet, and they already talk about a forking :D

i don't know how to react to a news like that!

I wonder if IBM might offer to pay Vitalek to quit Ethereum the day it's out, and go to work for IBM.

Wat. Why does everyone say this? I've been messing with it and doing tutorials for a month, and I'm late to the game.

It exists if you code and like to experiment with technology. It does not yet exist if you just like speculating and buying crypto-assets.

I listened to the interview back when this thread started, and it does have a kind of "underpants gnomes" feel to it.  The VP doesn't really articulate clearly how the coin is going to solve the cloud-support problem, why it needs Turing-complete scripting, or the basis for choosing Ethereum as the base.  It's possible that as a VP, he just doesn't understand these things, though.

I know, I thought they said they were going to have a prototype for CES - did that not happen?

There is nothing to pump, coins aren't on the exchanges yet.

Many newbies get confused and believe people are talking about the scam Ether coin when people refer to Ethereum

I suspect the only reason ether coin used that name is it's similarity to ethereum.
