The ETF will make no difference. In fact, it could be the catalyst for the final capitulation when it becomes apparent that there is not much interest in a bitcoin ETF amongst investors. Do you honestly think investors are clamoring to get into an asset class that has performed so badly this year?

FACT:  There have been multiple points this year that, had you bought, you would be sitting very pretty right now.

Well it's by far the worst performing hard (if you wanna call it that) asset YTD, down 60%. Basically 90%+ who bought btc this year are getting raped.

But if you ask the shills/bulltards, doubling and tripling down on bad bets is a genius move.

Untill now this year is the worst of all but it's not finished yet, it could still be the best one.

No it's one of the best investment you can ever make in your lifetime. Next year you'd wish you could give your right arm to get back at today's prices.

Don't be discouraged, there is no end of this year,but too much hope!

The Gox panic was a fairly easy shorting opportunity. Any idiot could have predicted prices would drop near the dec low. 

Also, the PBOC rumors of March-April were easy trading periods.

Exactly this.  Choosing a 9.5 month horizon over which to evaluate an investment is just fine...as long as your investment time horizon is 9.5 months. 

Of course, what happens if you look at a trailing twelve month view?  How do you like bitcoin NOW?  Compared to gold, silver, S&P 500, anything you want.  What about a three year view?

The bitcoin ETF has already been priced in, as has increased retailer acceptance of bitcoin.  We know it's going to happen, just not exactly when.  Market participants read the same forums we do.

We need some good old markus and willy inspired manipulation of the market to make this rocket go boom again.

Bitcoin is one of the BEST investments of 2014, if you were smart and bought < $350 when the weak hands panicked. Unlike the stock market which has been crashing all year, don't let the trolls fool you.

Okay, I'll do that. Maybe bitcoin will be one mirrrrion dollars by then. Or maybe zero. In the mean time, it's a volatile market, and timing entry is important. I'd prefer to see a reversal of the bear market before entering any (new) long term position, as averaging down in a bear market is simply bad risk management.

I cashed in my twins' college fund this morning to buy more.

They're only 6 but very wise and mature... I told them we could buy bitcoins that will be worth at least 1 million dollars by the time they're in high school, and they agreed I should buy more now while I still can!

Someone work this out in excel then, buy bitcoin every day this year and what would the worth be now.      Just pointing out to us that btc peaked and fell isnt useful as every asset does this and we cant say it wont go higher in future.
Thats where BTC is useful, I can buy it a hundred times.   A house I have to buy once usually, gold you got to buy at least an ounce but really theres no reason for people to go all in on btc and hope for the best.   The exchanges let people buy tiny amounts if they want, if you really dream of the long term story why not buy every day for a year.   Makes more sense to me as most people have most wealth in gradual earnings

Why arent we saying over the last year because in that case btc rose.   YTD is one way to frame it but it is just one of many and right now that comes close to the peak

At least I sold my Litecoin position that said it does make me curious what percentage relative gain it has now with the altcoin army in full swing as well, but I guess it has a decent value proposition now like Bitcoin.
