Title: Hardware question
Post by: Dschijn on September 25, 2014, 10:09:44 AM
Hi,

I am a 30 year old student from germany and need the help and knowledge of you bitcoin experts.
As some people are using setups with multiple GPUs in combination with riser cards and extra PSUs I would like to get some help and general information about that.

My project is NOT going to be used for Bitcoin or mining in general. I hope this kind of topics are "ok"?! :)

The project:
- MacBook Pro Retina with Thunderbolt and Windows 8.1 installation
- external PCIe enclosure connected via TB with a 25W PSU. So the enclosure will provide less than 25W to the PCIe slot!
- regular desktop GPU: MSI GTX 970 with 6pin & 8pin power connectors
- 500W Corsair ATX PSU with a "swex"
- PCIe riser cable with molex power cable. I bought this one: http://www.ebay.de/itm/121282947228 (http://www.ebay.de/itm/121282947228)
- mITX PC case to put everything inside

Similar setups with GTX 780Ti or even Titan GPUs have been proven to work as a (so called) eGPU setup in OSX and Windows 8.1.
But there are some GPUs that don't work.

So I would like to know if you could explain me where I could expect "problems" and help me understand.
I know that the PCIe slot should provide 75W, but the enclosure is limited to 25W. The riser should help, right?
As this setup will use two different PSUs, is it necessary to cut some lines of the riser to prevent damaging the circuit board of the enclosure?

Thanks in advance! :)

If it's not used for mining what will it be used for?

The best deals now are mining contracts, since you dont pay any electricity etc.

But this depends on you though, if you want it for learning purposes by a $20 usb miner.

What is this project for?  Need more details.  Is this for a Folding@Home type project?

This for using desktop graphics performance with a laptop.

But my main question is regarding the riser. If anyone could answer that?!

You can expect the CPUs to live a shorter life

Thanks, but not what I asked for ;)

As far as I know you want to use a desktop gpu on your laptop.

Bad advice, non of the mining contracts is profitable and they do charge electricity and maintenance.

Thx cakir, I am already active in that forum. Just want to check out the advice of miners who are working more with riser cards. in the TI forum most people don't have the deep understanding of the riser cards.

the card will work with full functionality only if it is 16x-16x riser, for mining it is not needed, it is enough 1x-16x.
