I'd like a H/W based RAID card and SATA III, but considering budget I'd consider SATA II and H/W RAID. I had once considered PERC RAID controllers as these could be had for a reasonable amount of money. Thank you. If you are pushing data over single gigabit then most of the sataII stuff will be plenty fast.
I've got a Highpoint RocketRaid 2680 I'm looking to sell. Supports 8x Sata III. Supports very high IOPS for SSD's. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115096 PERC's are indeed cheap and plentiful. They don't support jbod which can be a pita. I currently run the 1882ix-12 for RAID 0 with Cricial C300 SSDs. You will get plenty of performance witht he 1880ix line as well.
