Title: F*%! Linode
Post by: Daily Anarchist on May 06, 2012, 09:44:13 PM
A few months ago I asked Linode(my VPS) if they would accept Bitcoin as payment. They said no. So, I went onto their IRC channel and asked the people there why not. I got laughed at and scolded.

So, today I tried it again. Again, ridicule. You would think that intelligent techies at Linode would be able to wrap their heads around Bitcoin a little easier than the average dolt. But no. They're too brainwashed. So, I really don't think begging and pleading and trolling their IRC channel is going to get Linode to accept Bitcoin. The only way that's going to happen is if they lose enough of their business.

What I want to do is move my website to another VPS that does accept Bitcoin and then write Linode a letter telling them why I've left. It won't do any good. But maybe if more and more people do it, eventually they will change.

Sadly, I'm happy with Linode's service otherwise. I'm not the smartes sysadmin. I'm actually a noob and was only able to build my own VPS because I followed some excellent instructions from the Linode Library and got a lot of help from the people in the IRC channel.

I really want to move to a VPS that can offer me the things I need and currently get from Linode. But my problem is that I don't know what those things are. I know I like Ubuntu Servers, I run a LAMP stack. Can somebody tell me if there is a kickass bitcoin VPS out there? There are a lot of production sites in the Bitcoin world, like bitcoinadvertisers, BitInstant, Mt. Gox, etc. Who is their webhost/VPS?

I really don't want to send $100 a month to Linode anymore. They are arrogant fuckers who are behind the times. Please help!

They already have more than enough bitcoin from their heist.

Zing!

Seriously, VPS recommendations from the community would be great!

I've seen momentovps.com around as well as BitVPS, but I can't necessarily vouch for either personally.

Our website is currently being DDoS'd. Other than that, none of our services are disrupted. You can join #bitvps on freenode or email sales@bitvps.com in the mean time if you have questions about our service. Or, I can answer questions here. :-)

Do you have any guess why you're being DDoSed? Also, is your server Xen, openvz? Can I run Ubuntu 12.04 with LAMP? Where are your servers located? How many clients do you have? Is your IRC channel friendly towards noob sysadmins who ask lots of questions?

Agreed with the above posters - Linode likely still have $200k in stolen bitcoin kicking about, so they're not likely desperate for more  :P

Have used momentovps, very good service, can't comment on bitvps but I've heard good things about them too :)

We can pretty much do whatever you want. We have around 85 customers and host about 120 virtual machines. RG is our admin who will help you along if you have any questions.

My site uses Cinfu VPS as a secondary server, at the moment it's basically only used for backups. Our main server is a robust dedicated server from Leaseweb, which doesn't accept bitcoins. I wish they did though.

They have both Xen and OpenVZ available, I would suggest you hit up IRC (freenode) and join #bitvps. The poor fool that is trying to run a DDoS will find out why that is a bad idea when rg wakes up.

Not for me it isn't:

DNS Points to Prohibited IP
You've requested a page on a website (bitvps.com) that is on the CloudFlare network. Unfortunately, it is resolving to an IP address that is creating a conflict within CloudFlare's system. If you are the owner of this website, you should login to CloudFlare and change the DNS A records for to resolve to a different IP address.

Yes, BTC Guild is offering VPS services.  While there are cheaper options, I stand behind my hardware performance.  Quite a few of the users came from Linode and benchmarks show we perform the same or better everytime, while a new batch of nodes are being shipped out this month with even better hardware.  Total network downtime since the start of the trial run has been less than 3 minutes (using 1-minute resolution for the heartbeat monitoring) in the last 3 months, while hardware uptime is 100%.

However, it is still labeled a trial run - Not because the service is "beta" or in any way unreliable, but because I'm not ready to start offering the services to the public outside of the Bitcoin community.  I'm working on quite a significant overhaul of the control panel and billing systems to make upgrading servers and creating your own virtual cloud as easy as it is on Linode, which I want to have in place before starting to market my company's services to the general public.

A good hosting service is Hetzner Online: http://www.hetzner.de/

For example, a dedicated server 32GB DDR2, 3TB mirrored storage, 1GBit conenction 59 euros (77 dollars) per month.

A basic VPS is 7,90 eur month (10 dollars).

They don't accept bitcoin as a payment. However hosting is a business of scale - if you really want to use bitcoin vps providers, you have to have other reasons than just the "coolness factor", such as anonymity or something. You can't really compete with Hetzner if you look at the features/price.

I too spend about $100/mo at Linode. My main reason is their network access policy that specifically allows me to run TOR exit nodes.

If someone can suggest a VPS who's TOS will allow me to maintain my exits, I will be MORE than happy to take my $100/mo from Linode and give it to someone else.

Would you mind making TOS addition with something like:

Quote
btclot.com does not prohibit the use of distributed, peer to peer network services such as Tor, nor does btclot.com routinely monitor the network communications of customer vps as a normal business practice. However, customers are responsible for the contents of network traffic exiting their vps. Any usage that prompts the receipt of abuse complaints pertaining to violation of United States and/or international copyright law must be promptly discontinued to avoid service cancellation for violation of these terms.

I have several VMs running at bitvps atm and can recommend them without any kind of hesitation. Their service has so far been really fast and rg has been really good about helping out etc if there have been any issues. He even did a security audit for me on some stuff I paid a third party to have setup so overall a really good experience with "handholding" as needed. I haven't tried the new managed service he's offering but am atm seriously considering it for another project I'm working on.

Not quite what you're after, but look at this:

https://tools.bitfolk.com/redmine/issues/63

This isn't that interesting until you know that this issue was created by the owner of bitfolk.

Perhaps with a bit more interest (I wouldn't like to suggest what method of expressing that interest, since it's very easy to descend into "annoying spammer" when trying to promote bitcoin).

Personally, I'd love it if http://bitfolk.com/ accepted bitcoin; it's run by a really competent techie guy, and is small enough to offer excellent customer service.

The objection (http://lists.bitfolk.com/lurker/message/20120330.101014.e5569f81.ca.html) from the owner is that "the accountant doesn't know what to make of it".  I wonder how many other potential-bitcoin businesses are being held hostage to overly-conservative accountants?

This is exactly how Linode and their fanboys responded to IPv6 support requests for almost a decade. They're clueless about security, technology, PR and business. Shy away.

Price looks good. I'm in for one for now. I'll see how the TOS works out with my TOR exit and will probably get 5-6 more next month if it all works out.

I sent them this e-mail directly after the Linode incident:

Quote
Hi Linode,

I've noticed the current security incidents with your company. I have no
stake in these issues, but as a computer professional I'm disappointed
about how these issues are handled by Linode as a company.

The press release
(http://status.linode.com/2012/03/manager-security-incident.html) here
reveals very little, please provide the internet community with detailed
truthful information, and if it's a Linode insider that's behind the
robberies, he should be handed over to the authorities immediately.

I also assume that you're working closely with law enforcement to get to
the bottom of this issue. I'm afraid you reputation is damaged now, and
the best you could do is to attempt to repair it.

I will advise any of our clients not to use hosting with Linode, as the
handling of this security breach is raising a lot of questions, that are
still unanswered.

Unsurprisingly I never received an answer from them, but I'm sure to advise all not to use them.
I usually keep hosting companies within reasonable travel distance, so I can go and talk to staff
in person should the  need raise anyway.
