Title: Anyone ever had someone else register domains under your name w/o permissions?
Post by: DeathAndTaxes on May 07, 2012, 12:48:28 PM
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/retweetforcoins.com

The contact data isn't shown here because it is in privacy lock but the registrar just contacted me (automated) and provided registration details and it has my name, address, email, phone for contact.  ???

Same for:
retweetforcoins.com
tweetforcoins.com
retweet4bitcoin.com
twitterbitcoin.com

and a dozen more.

Thought I would post here as the real owner may be a bitcointalk user.

Should I be worried?  Or should the real owner be worried?  I guess if I was malicious I could use the registration information to seize control of the domains.

That's a nice bit of fail. Probably a squatter looking to cash in on the FeedZeBirds popularity. I'd say grab them and give them to the FZB people.

Maybe they were a gift from someone that trusts you to do the right thing with them.

Should qualify as "abandoned property" perhaps?
Or like a planted gun... or self planted gun maybe?

I'd be worried if your contact info wasn't publicly available. If it was, I'd still be concerned as to why someone wouldn't want their own name associated with the domains and what I might be in for by passively accepting some responsibility for them.

If you didn't create these domains then that is strange.

Who has,
  • access to your real name
  • access to your address
  • access to your e-mail info
  • access to your phone number
  • access to bitcoin info

Culprits,
  • An attacker that has compromised your network.
  • A Bitcoin friend, who through a mental pause moment, registered them with your info.
  • A sale or goods exchange that involved Bitcoins or Bitcoin information.
  • A Bitcoin Exchange where you've been trading your Bitcoins for cash.

I contacted the registrar I am hoping it simply is a "glitch" on their backend where they mixed up accounts and applied my contact info to another user's domains.

But yeah strange and troubling.

Ask the registrar for the registering IP address and payment details.

Have you absolutely ruled out amnesia? Or multiple personality disorder? Sounds crazy but you never know, how well do you know yourself?

Have you been visiting Silk Road recently?
