Title: Is there any way to buy Bitcoin with cash?
Post by: Aukoue on September 28, 2014, 07:35:58 PM
I would like to buy Bitcoin with cash, but I don't know anyone irl, who has Bitcoin and could sell me some. Bitinstant would let you buy it for cash through Walmart/CVS/other stores cash deposit, but it doesn't exist anymore. And Bitcoin price on eBay is just ridiculous.

That was quite eye opening, but I guess you can be more cautious than that.

You're 100 times more likely to get robbed buying from someone online, though. Comparatively speaking, buying bitcoin in person is very safe.

Also, in that particular example, it's the seller getting robbed.

Please do not give false info to newcomers.
You only get robbed if you meet in the slums.

Meet in a casino at the security desk or something similar.
You can also just buy moneypak/reloadIT/vanilla and exchange with that on LBC.

Bank deposit, wire, wu, mg...list goes on and on.
PM me if you need any help.
I never said it was definite that you would get robbed, I never said Don't do it, I said I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT, because it has happened to me, even if some of the most securest places.
So stop hopping dick, and instead of just saying I 'gave' false information, You could have at least recommend other places.
You know, instead of being a douche

I just sold .25 bitcoin via cash by mail.
The buyer mailed me the cash via certified letter with signature delivery.
I used a multisig 2 of 3 transaction with a trusted member here as an arbitrator.

The multisig takes the risk of nonpayment out the system. When the cash shows up, I sign the multisig address to release the bitcoin.
If the guy doesen't mail the cash, the bitcoin does not leave the multisig address and the arbitrator is called in.
The arbitrator sees there is no proof of delivery and signs the bitcoin back to me.

Worked as smooth as butter (without the need for any arbitration).

Check http://www.meetup.com/ to see whether there are any bitcoin groups that meet regularly in your area. You can probably find someone with whom you can trade with in an environment that is more likely secure than meeting someone off CL ... and also gives you an opportunity to learn more etc.

For people that don't live in a large population center Localbitcoins can be hit or miss if you are looking for a face to face transaction.
There are also people that do cash in the mail on Localbitcoins, but they either use escrow (which requires total trust with the person doing the escrow) or you have to send the cash first and hope they send you the bitcoins later.

An alternative is a 2 of 3 multi-signature transaction with an neutral arbitrator. With this type of transaction there is no trust required.
It is easy to do once you know how and the costs are negligible.

Look into it.

This is wrong; the sellers on localbitcoins use the site escrow, so you only need to trust the exchange escrow and arbitration system.

Wrong again. If you are sending cash in the mail then you need to trust the person you are buying from as there will be very little evidence for either party to give to the LBC escrow service so they can essentially rule either way

I am sure you can find a reputable seller who can make the exchange easy on you. However, you should not send large amounts of cash through the mail...

First, you should trade sensibly by choosing reputable exchangers.

Second, if the seller lies and you protest, then basically the exchange support cannot rule against you.

Third, for cash in mail it is highly suggested that you require video evidence of the pick up of the package, opening of package, counting of the money, and validating the legitimacy of the notes. How will somebody fake the pickup of a package of cash at USPS? If you also make a coinvincing video then support cannot rule against you.

Ask any reputable cash by mail seller for more tips.

Someone could mail you an empty envelope or something
You won't know it's empty until after its delivered
The usps tracking number will show its been delivered
Very old scam was common on eBay in the early days

The topic is about buying btc with cash.
Anyway,
If you are the seller and you take some video footage of the pick-up and show that you received the box empty then support will rule in your favor unless there is video footage of comparable proof from the counterparty.

So open the envelope carefully, take out the cash, seal it again and start the camera rolling
Make video of opening empty envelope

Claim you been scammed
Only do business with escrow, insurance or in person at a police station etc , there's too many ways to be robbed with other options

The exchange/escrow can very well rule against you if you protest. It would be very possible for you to send an empty envelope (as suggested above) and it would be very possible for the seller to claim the envelope was empty when it was in fact not.

Title: Re: Is there any way to buy Bitcoin with cash?

The exchange/escrow can very well rule against you if you protest.
It happened to you? And what was the evidence like on both sides? In my experience if the evidence is of equal weight then it stays in dispute.

It would be very possible for you to send an empty envelope (as suggested above) and it would be very possible for the seller to claim the envelope was empty when it was in fact not.

For less hassle, you can pick a reputable seller, like a pro trader, but it is not required since you only need to be responsible. Demand video from seller (before you send anything) and require seller to include footage of all aspects of the delivery and inspection (for seller's protection). Take video footage of your-self sealing cash and handing package to USPS clerk; you can use this to resolve dispute in your favor if seller does not produce video proof.

What you negotiate in a trade before you mark payment complete is a verbal contract that becomes part of the terms of the trade and seller is bound thereby.
it is highly suggested that you require nonstop video footage evidence of 1) the pick up of the package from USPS clerk, 2) opening of package, 3) counting of the money, and 4) validating the legitimacy of the notes, optionally 5) any reference number that you included with your package or proof that the seller was at a USPS facility and picked up the package from a real clerk.

Make sure that the seller picks this up at the post office and links you to that video footage as part of the trade; if seller fails then you get the escrow.

I hope this helps! :)

Here's a magic trick for you, seal an empty envelope and write the receiver name on it, place another envelope on top, turn on the camera and video yourself putting the money in the envelope, writing the address and giving the bottom envelope to usps and get a mailing receipt

Now you have video evidence that you paid when you haven't because the envelope usps got was empty

We could argue all day but there is a million ways to scam from both sides

That's not correct; when seller gets it then his video footage will show that you scammed him. That is even assuming that this can be done coinvincingly... Any questions?

Any remittances services (WU or MG) via a trusted trader will do it.
