No, you cannot use an ordinary computer to mine bitcoin. You can only mine bitcoin with dedicated bitcoin mining hardware that runs by itself or connects to your computer.

Well you can, but the results will be shit. You can calculate your gains given your kHas in coinwarz.com

Don't try to mine bitcoin. You won't get anything with you i7.
You may try to mine some CPU altcoins, but I am not sure how much you can get.

Very little, like a few cents a day not coubting electricity

I see. So CPU mining would end up with a loss after electricity cost. In that case, OP you should simply forget about CPU mining unless you want to mine just for fun. :)

i spotted a good coin which can be mine(it's called burst, checks the alt section) with hdd, it's your best bet

CPU is a dead way of not mining at all lol.

If you absolutely must mine, choose an alt coin, but I personally wouldnt bother on equipment such as yours unless you're going to invest some money into it.

simply you can't mine bitcoin with a pc anymore that's it. go do some research on asic miners.

Do some ROI math electricity makes cpu mining dead.  GPU is dead for most a few still are able to do it profitable.  But asics are so much more efficient you really don't stand a chance if you are not using them.

Not worth the time or energy trying to mine with a cpu, only dedicated hardware can make mining btc viable but you would have to invest a lot of money on asics to even think of making ROI. Far easier to just buy some btc

hmm, something around 10 megaHash?  ....       simply, don't try it, you will only waste a time

It is useless to mine btc with a pc.
You will burn out your company before you can get anything significant.
Bitcoin difficulty is just too much to mine with a cpu.

Sorry, carlosbtc, it's not rational to mine at all at the moment.  Not CPU, not GPU, not Asic, not Scrypt Asic, not Cloud mining either.

Electrical costs, electrical capacity, Cooling costs, Hosting costs, Maintenance costs, Service costs, hidden costs in Cloud mining all contribute to you being a loser the moment you step into any type of mining.

If you're doing it for hobby, fun, and to learn about it, get like a Rockminer R-box or used Antminer S1 or S3.  You'll get a bunch of BTC dust or some pocket change, but at least you'll be able to say you're Bitcoin mining.

Easiest and least painful way to get some Bitcoins, is to buy it from a trusted exchange or trusted seller.

Before jumping at all, read up all you can about Bitcoin, and don't be afraid to ask questions in this forum.  Good luck!

If you want to mine just for fun I found it easier just to mine when I am actively using the computer. I went ahead and bought one of the USB asic miners and run it once and while. Granted you won't make a lot but hey its an interesting concept. I plan on building a raspbery pi miner and running it in my friends house. His eletrcicy is completely free so I can lead into some profit there.

Even if free electricity changes of paying off the usb sticks are slim.  At their price per gh or mh, it is a novelty at this point for fun.  Your better off going for a S3 or something newer as far as price per gh.

I would be surprised if you can pay for the stick itself let alone a RPI to run it..

Yes I have 2 S3's they appear to be one of the more profitable hardware miners if you can pick one up cheap enough.

That is out of my price range currently. But we will see

I agree with you. Now BTC mining has become more difficult and it's almost impossible to make profit with ordinary PC.

if you are thinking about mining bitcoin with cpu then result will null
you should try mining some CPU coins with your i7 CPU
to mine bitcoin you need ASIC mining hardware or mining farm

What CPU coins are there, are they worth much? Is there any profit in it?

There are 20 altcoins listed on http://cpucoinlist.com/, but it seems to me that they are GPU-mineable already...
I don't think CPU mining is profitable at all.

you can mine but you will get almost nothing with i7...  You need ASIC Chip based Bitcoin Miner or some Super Computer.  Please do not use Government or Work Place Super Computer to mine BTC.  It's not worth getting into trouble

You should mine some CPU only altcoin or some that can be nicely mined with CPU. I mine Monero from end of May with 4 threads of i5.

Nice suggestion, but monero seems to be not profitable for me.

The better computing power you have the faster you can mine. Better gear=better return.

Doge is using the scrypt algorithm and scrypt ASICs are all over the place. Those ASICs can hash thousands time faster than your CPU, and so you can't compete with the other miners.
