Title: Bitcoin with Paypal?
Post by: rooflez on May 09, 2012, 05:29:12 AM
I know this is a well-discussed topic on the forum, but can anyone clarify what buying bitcoin with paypal is like?

mostly risky for the seller, because paypal can be reversed.

also risky for the buyer because if paypal finds out (somehow) they will freeze their account.

usually not a good idea.

What it's like?

Well, it's like buying a can of Coke from a hotel vending machine.  You know that it shouldn't cost more the same as the can of Coke from 7-eleven, but the only option if you really want it is to pay up.

With VirWoX you can buy SLL using PayPal, then trade SLL for BTC:

If you are Scandinavian, a PayPal debit card might be used here:

Physical Bitcoin, paid for with credit card:

The reason there are so few options with PayPal as payment is that PayPal expressly prohibits a merchant to use PayPal for the sale of Bitcoins.  Additionally, because the payment can be charged back easily, merchants that o have some angle must charge a higher fee to do so.

I would think it's a bad idea for the seller, since I've heard from many of my friends that selling bitcoins through paypal is the absolute worst way to transfer them because of charge-back.

Now I know I'm new to bitcoins but in terms of paypal I'm a veteran, and I'd agree with everyone else when they say avoid it entirely. People on the internet try too hard and act too slick to be trusted with a payment method such as paypal... especially considering they usually side with the buyer and not the seller.

I'm actually Canadian. So that can't be an option.

I'm looking for a way to buy bitcoin with paypal for a good premium, as well.

rooflez, ok - did you check this list ?

Check out the list of currency exchanges and fixed rate exchanges, also try bitcoin-otc, you might get lucky there.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade#Currency_exchanges

Also, when buying with paypal, a lot of people have been burnt by ppl that reverse their payments, so don't have too high hopes of finding someone to do paypal business with, but I bet you're probably going to have someone offer you a smaller amount if interested. sturles often sell small amounts for paypal. he's a bitcoin-otc.

#bitcoin-otc (http://bitcoin-otc.com/) on Freenode is a possibility.  In general noone there will accept PayPal from anyone without a good rating on the web of trust, but some users of the exchange offer very small amounts to beginners who want to establish a rating.  Not a good solution if you need 50 BTC now, but may be worthwile if you are in it for a longer term.  When you have an established rating (a few weeks old, some positive, no negative), you will start finding more people who are willing to trade with you using PayPal, and at better rates as well.

Remember to read the guide first.  Especially the part about GPG authentication.  Nobody will accept PayPal from unauthenticated users.  Expect some healthy scepticism for the first few trades.  It isn't about you, it is all the scammers who come there every day trying to convert the balance on their stolen PayPal accounts to BTC.  Often wasting a lot of our time trying to convince us to trade anyway.  An advice: Use the e-mail on your PayPal account when registering with GPG.  We are much less sceptical of payments coming from the same e-mail as you registered with.  Don't use PayPal if you want to trade anonymously.

Honestly just use bit instant. It might take you leaving your house to visit a bank but it is a reliable, safe, and fast service.

I think I'd like to clarify on my situation:

I'm under the age of 18, therefore unable to create a bank account without my parent's legal consent.

I would like to use paypal as I can have a friend deposit money in my account very easily without any questions asked. I'm not attaching a debit card to my account as it'll likely be a gift payment.

I'm looking to buy about 37 bitcoin for around 200 Canadian, can anyone help?

I don't understand Bitcoin OTC either =\

Canadian? There are several methods to buy bitcoins with cash in Canada.

VirtEx:
 - http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/VirtEx  (deposit cash at any TD Bank)

 - http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Canadian_Bitcoins  (accepts cash by mail XpressPost)

May as well just skip Paypal altogether. If you can't find another form of obtaining bitcoins then you probably shouldn't be getting into this anyway.

I might be able to do that...But you'll have  wait until I withdraw the funds, then I'll send you the coins.

You could also maybe post in the trade section of this forum and see if anyone will meet you to trade in your town. When you're out of the newbe section that is.

Hey

You can buy easily bitcoins with PayPal through http://www.coinmama.com

A site like coinmama is grossly overpriced.  Unfortunately with Paypal, because of the chargeback possibility, it is difficult.  I ended up finding someone I could trust when I sold to them.  Otherwise, I've just used coinbase with a bank account.

Offer something for sale for bitcoins that's the easiest way to get them.

You transact something like this..

BitcoinBuyer advertises I can convert your bitcoins into items, tell me what you want.
BitcoinSeller replies I want a new 7850 graphics card of $180 value.
BitcoinBuyer buys the item from a store for $180 dollars
Bitcoin Seller transfers the bitcoin in exchange for the item

Notice how this transaction avoided any bank account and PayPal!

This also becomes a $ swap contract should you need a lawyer to arbitrage a dispute it's recognized in law.

Enjoy. ;)

I would not recommend selling Bitcoins for paypal, unless the trader has a very good reputation. Paypal has always been a problem for all sorts of online exchanges since any transaction can be reversed.
