It is more like why you banks need to support my closed platform x which will never have more than limited appeal because it will never have universal support. Of course Bitcoin is the elephant in the room because as you point out it is the answer to all those topics. Banks could actually benefit from Bitcoin. Imagine if in your online banking account you could exchange money in your checking account for coins (and in reverse). The killer app for Bitcoin. 99% of users would never use Mt.Gox they simply would buy coins from their bank or when paid in coins convert them back into funds in their checking account instantly. Makes all those closed p2p fund transfer systems look quaint. They are taking about single-use account numbers and other ideas, but it's just band-aids on a legacy system.
