Title: So what is a scammer exactly?
Post by: alabamafan1 on October 05, 2014, 02:16:49 AM
I see so many "scam accusations" that I feel scammer's definition has become way too broad. There are other words in the book besides scammer that are more appropriate. So lets come up with a true, good definition for the word:

Scammer

Do you have any suggestion? I agree, I felt that 'scammer' is too plain. However, most of us is used to this word, Scammer.

Someone who makes claims that cannot be sustained by facts.

fraudulence is referring to illegal activities in servere cases.
scammer is deceiving others but in tricky way not related to legality. It is used more often in this forum.
Cheater and deceiver can be used in much more cases.
Just my opinion. You may share yours.

Scammer is very broadly used in this forum, and I think sometimes it is a little bit of a heavy title for some people who are just unreliable but who may still be trustworthy.

scammer is the umbrella term for
conman
liar
theif
extorionist
phisher
deceiver

basically anyone without morals that wants other peoples bitcoins, but doesnt want to trade honorably to get them.

as for being used heavily. well thats because its a 'accusation' and not a conviction, the scammer accusation thread is more of a warning listing of potential risks, the more evidence provided and the more time passes where the accused does not remedy the accusation. the more people rely on those facts to not deal with the accused.

put it this way, if someone was accused of child molestation. would you let them babysit your kids every night and let them bathe/shower your kids. i bet you wouldnt. i bet you wouldn't say "its ok ill let them babysit and bathe my kids, until they actually molest my kid and stand infront of a judge for it. they can do whatever they want"

again the accusation thread is purely a warning, and in most cases the warnings come with evidence. its not meant to be a judgement. just a warning

I flagged two people as scammers for selling Class 4 hand-held laser pointers.

It is not that I thought they were scammers per se: I just wanted to trigger the "Caution: Trade with extreme caution" warning due to the careless way the product was being sold.

In the specific case of class 4 laser pointers, there is no safe way to use them. Lasers that can cause blindness due to reflection on matte surfaces should not be hand-held. A dedicated room with an interlock on the door to turn off the beam should be strongly considered.

It's not that broad. A scammer is someone who is suspected of or attempts to take money away from someone via deception or theft.

I define it as someone who has an intent to receive a payment and never deliver their advertised service, or someone who deceives another person into thinking they're buying something better/different than what they're actually selling.

Someone who makes claims that cannot be sustained by facts.
I wouldn't say that someone who speculates (someone who makes claims not supported by facts) is a scammer. I think this is much too broad. Even if they are not speculating and trying to pass something as a fact, they could easily simply be wrong or misinformed.

I would consider a scammer to be someone who tries to get money by misleading someone as to the circumstances (usually by having the other person sending money or goods "first")

Someone who commits fraud.

fraud: deceit, trickery, sharp practice, or breach of confidence, perpetrated for profit or to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage
