Title: Bitcoin cruise ship?
Post by: fabiola! on October 07, 2014, 03:25:05 PM
Bitcoin conference/networking aboard a cruise ship? Good idea? It wouldn't be that difficult to organize plus it would be more fun than the ones @ the Magic Kingdom.

Thoughts?
:)

great idea for the social side, but one stumbling block.. and if you ever been on a cruise ship you'd know it..

internet/speed and costs.

I know but why do you care, it's quality networking time, conferences, etc, if you're gonna lock yourself in your room and trade btc all day long then why even bother coming along?

you dont need to be locked in the cabin to use the internet. the invention of laptops, tablet pc's and smart phones cured that.

There are loads of businesses already doing this, it's not a new idea of mine. You can mix work with pleasure. As long as everyone is open to participate and network and socialise, not shut the world out and trade all day.

Sounds like a blast, now how would we buy our tickets in bitcoin?  ;)

Well first we need a lot of ppl to be on board (no pun intended). Then we would have to find a good cheap deal for a ship. We either all buy in fiat individually (on the same ship), or we rent a whole ship in fiat and pre sell tickets in btc, but I can't organize it as I have no skills, it would have to be someone with experience. But if it goes ahead I'm definitely going and taking maybe 2 or 3 friends with me, that's 4 tickets secured so far  : )

i never said shut the world out. im just imagining the average passenger usually buys 10 minutes internet time just to say hello on facebook to family back home and send a quick picture or two.

imagine the internet costs/speed of people sending payments to buy a bitcoin T-Shirt onboard or to offer bitcoin faucet like giveaways to other passengers / interested parties.

yes alot of talking will happen but the lack of ability to show-off bitcoin, to actually use bitcoin without hindrance, is an issue that must be atleast considered.

kind of like setting up a different type of networking event and finding out the ships projector is not working. the little details cant be ignored or presumed to be capable of running during a cruiseliner.

i say this as i was on a cruise and found trying to just view the blockchain was an issue.

EDIT:
ah i just read your not experienced with organising, ok well hopefully someone more organized comes along that can see all the pitfalls and find solutions BEFORE booking the boat

Also since it will be a BTC ship internet will be included in the price!

Nah, I know a lot of organising has to go into this BEFORE booking the boat!
The ship has to be BIG, I'm thinking at least one indoor pool, tennis court...mini golf would help...

for this you need at least 100 "high rollers" and 200-300 budget travelers

high rollers = people who will spend around 10-15BTC/day
budget = people who will spend around 1-3BTC/day

no tickets ..... as it will be hilarious to tell some people that they have to pay 39BTC to board the ship and then ask them for more money ...

and to make it all inclusive you will have to charge them all with 50 BTC at least ... how many people you know will pay 50 BTC to get on this ship?

A pool was created specifically for this.

It helps when planning something like this to know that people actually have the funds. BitPools helps with that.

Hold on a second, what? There are cruise ships going for $300 for 3 nights, all inclusive, that's only 1 btc atm.

For me that thing sounded like you want the full boat for yourself :) that's what I've calculated to a ship with  a capacity of about 249 persons

And that ship is ready to server immediately!!!

Otherwise I can get you a Catamaran or a Gulet at a much lower price :)

What location?

What location what?

Where I can get the Catamaran/Gulet/Yacht ? In any port! But it would be nicer if you all gather in the same port so I can pick you all up at the same time!
And we can make the a trip for a few days and then slowly leave everyone of you to the nearest port

You're telling me you can get these vessels to any port world wide? That seems like you have quite the connections or work with a world wide sailing company.

If you pay for it why not? It's not like I'm gonna do it for free just to see fabiola :)

You can rent a yacht for Bitcoin in Vancouver. We just never found enough people with the money to spend on that. It would have been a tiny event unless rich people come from elsewhere. Maybe we should try to organize that...

Yes but that's the whole point! You get to interact in person, network, brainstorm new ideas, etc! Plus there are other fun things to do, apart from shows everynight (if included) we could organise fun activities, especially if we have a swimming pool, sort of like a mini Bitcoin olympics, like playing Marco Polo in the pool, for btc, I bet that's never been done before...or a water polo tournament, or any kind of fun activities, like the sort of thing corporations do to help their employees bond.

I think rather than a conference or meeting it should be a Cruise ship for the party of celebrating bitcoins $10K mark :D or either way just to celebrate bitcoins. Time off from the computers and bitcointalk (even though that is extremely hard for me ). Man they should have bitcoin cruise ships by now!!!

Well, let's do it! We need to spread the word a bit more, we need more people on board! Also, where did Richard " serje" Branson go? He's got contacts and some priceless nautical knowledge, we need him on this boat in case it sinks and we end up in some desert island.

We don't need gambling, why gamble against a casino when you can play any game free of charge and just get your opponent BTC???

I think it's better to play games against each other and just get the money directly from the loser!

P.S. If there will be persons that will refuse to pay they will be sharks dinner!

It seems you don't know a lot about internet, the cost of the internet depends on the boat position on the map ... if the boat is near a country coast you can get internet from that country in some ways, if you are here https://www.google.ro/maps/@31.0530448,-46.8915094,8z?hl=en then you my friend will have to pay for satellite internet and not every boat has satellite internet because that is a little expensive.

We or at least me want a ship only for us! Because if you want to go on a normal cruise just book one and get shitty internet! I am trying to make a personalized offer here that can even let you in the nearest port to your hometown!

How much do you think cruiseships cost? What are you proposing exactly? I've read the thread and it seems merely a fantasy pipedream. If you're worried about the internet on a ship I'd suggest you not bother with one, because clearly it wouldn't be suitable for your needs. I also don't think bitcoin will work out anywhere for you either as to use it publicly you'll likely have to use public wifi or your cell phone and they aren't exactly secure either.

This was a subscription that appeared in March when there were some rumors that roaming will be abolished after 1 January 2015
After 1 month it was confirmed as rumor and my phone company decided to to change all I have to annually instead of monthly for new subscribers

At one point in time I even tried to sell that subscription here but no one wanted it! here is the link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=612288.0

A little off topic for Whitehouse

Did you know what Angela Merkel did after she found out from Snowden that the USA government is intercepting Germany's government phone calls and everything???
She changed the devices of all government to Blackberry because that's the only way to have privacy!

Do you know how many Londoners were charged a few years ago when they organized the riot in North London over BBM? 0 (zero)!!!!
Do you know what happened to the Londoners who tried to organize the riots over Twitter and Facebook? Police was there waiting for them to arrive and when they got there they got their asses kicked!

I think a cruise would be pretty cool if it was just like a floating conference or expo. Would make it a bit more exciting, especially if they stopped off at some cities where bitcoin was used a lot.

That's not exactly true. I heard there were a few people charged using their Blackberries. Assuming you're safe by letting someone else look after your privacy is how people get caught. BB's are probably only anonymous in the same way bitcoin is ie not if you're not very careful with it.

OK i might got that wrong but at least the London police didn't had access to the BBM servers.
I guess that RIM only did what was right to do and how they said they will do it!
They will check and if they find anything that is of help to the police they will only give details about that person or persons!

... but let's just stay focus on the cruise here ... open another thread with this and I will join it ;)

It seems you didn't read the whole topic dude!!!!

We or at least me want a ship only for us! Because if you want to go on a normal cruise just book one and get shitty internet! I am trying to make a personalized offer here that can even let you in the nearest port to your hometown!

And if you my friend trust the internet from a cruise ship then I am sorry for your BTC and all your security in terms of online things!

Also my dear friend
tell me how much do you think this thing costs?
http://c3270052.r52.cf0.rackcdn.com/onboard-internet-satellite-feature.jpg

How much do you think cruiseships cost? What are you proposing exactly? I've read the thread and it seems merely a fantasy pipedream. If you're worried about the internet on a ship I'd suggest you not bother with one, because clearly it wouldn't be suitable for your needs. I also don't think bitcoin will work out anywhere for you either as to use it publicly you'll likely have to use public wifi or your cell phone and they aren't exactly secure either.

I can assure you my phone is secure!Oh and guess what my phone is a BB :) so I don't stay at wifi owners pity!
As a side note I have 2GB of data anywhere in Europe every month!
Beat my subscription now!

as about wifi .... I don't even use wifi at work .... that's why I have unlimited data plan ... wanna see what I am doing on my phone ... hack my cellphone network :)

Cruise ships can be rented! That thing can't be rented as easy as a ship ... you have to buy it and then sell it :) if you find a buyer

How much does it cost to rent a cruise ship? Roughly?

Depends on how big you want it to be I mean how many persons will have to get on board because it will be useless to rent a cruise ship that has 250 capacity when there will only be 20 persons on board

This is why I recommend a Catamaran or a Gulet, the experience will be much more interesting and we will save a lot on fuel ;)

I wanted a swimming pool cause it would be a fun addition especially if we wanted to organise competitions, etc, but it's not a deal breaker I guess.
A Catamaran, with or without sails?
If we get a Gulet, I know how to sail, but we would need a few more ppl on board who also know how to sail, it's a team effort, plus I wouldn't be stong enough for some tasks if it's a big one, and I'm scared of heights i.e. climbing up the masts is a no-no for me.

If this falls through you might consider planning a group event on a traditional cruise ship and coordinate with the company to reserve sections of the ship for private group events.

People might be more amenable to this than a potential sausage fest.

too expensive imo

most of us in this space have very little cash or coins but are enthusiasts, small investors and want to change the way of things

I like idea of socialising as most of us are one man bands and private imo, and think many more of us should come out of shadows and meet like minded people

personally would rather meetup with people for a couple beers first.
cruises take days and you're talking x,xxx minimum all in, several x,xxx more like

I would rather spend on day to day ;living and an extra btc or two
