Title: Generosity of Bitcoin Users
Post by: roy on May 14, 2011, 05:31:52 AM
Do we have a list of charities/non-profit orgs that accept Bitcoins for donations?

All I know is of the following...
Name of OrgAddressReceived so far (14/may/2011)
EFF - Electronic Frontier Foundation1MCwBbhNGp5hRm5rC1Aims2YFRe2SXPYKt3486.92
FSF - Free Software Foundation1PC9aZC4hNX2rmmrt7uHTfYAS3hRbph4UN313.04737515
(There was also the Japanese Tsunami relief fund someone started here, but as it wasn't an official organisation I haven't listed it)

I think Bitcoins could easily be associated with the anonymous giving to charities.
If places like the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, World Wide Fund, Wikipedia, Wikileaks, etc.. I think it would be a big boost to the image.
As Bitcoins seem ideal for giving to charity due to the minimal fees and the simple transportation across the world, why don't we all try to get more places to offer it?

So EFF has received nearly $30,000 in Bitcoin donations?  Wow.  Way to go, Bitcoiners!

In addition to the list from the Bitcoin wiki is the list of charities in which donations through Witcoin can be made.

Any charity can register to be included.  Those who post, vote or reply on witcoin can configure their Witcoin user account such that a certain percent of the proceeds they earn after post, reply or voting can be donated to one or more charities of their choosing.

I can also attest first hand to the fact that witcoin makes an effort to determine that the listed entities are actually affiliated with the listed addresses.

Not if they sold them at $.70 each.
