I personally use Kiv's GUI miner - http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3878.0 Youll have to configure that depending on what pool your using (or going solo). The bitcoin client doesnt (necessarily) have to be present on your mining rig, so that button you pressed to generate coins in basically solo mining with your CPU (youll probably never see any payout from that). You may wanna look into GPU miners
