A good long term investment good be a PoS with real and growing actual daily use and innovative and adaptive tech orientation, ie. not a mere tool of financial speculation. IMHO FIMK has very good potential to fulfill those specs.

The only long term strategy is: buy low, sell high, even Bitcoin.

Donīt fall in love with a coin.

I'd probably put Dnotes at number 1, moderate appreciation with no downturns (still up 2000% in 7 months which is awesome).

This long term graph sort of tells it all doesn't it? https://poloniex.com/exchange/btc_note

I'd agree that buying low and selling high is a great strategy with less stable coins, but that is not really appropriate for a long term investor.

I like some of the things I'm seeing with XCurrency, but it's been a while since I've followed their thread (too many hyped up morons).

I have to admit the chart is impressive. XCurrency seems to be at the forefront of technology advancement. DNotes seems to be one of, if not the only, coin that realizes it requires more than just the latest tech to be successful. The majority of my small investment will be in those two, for now anyway.

Maieuticoin. Buy it while it's still cheap, put in wallet and stake. Turn your cents into dollars

My number one performer this year has been DNotes, by a longshot. I like the direction they're headed, they have an understanding of business that no new technology can replicate.

Bitcoin is obviously a favorite, and they are ahead by a longshot in terms of consumer adoption. However the majority of the market share is still up for grabs, as billions of people haven't even heard of cryptocurrency yet.

Although I have used and profited on many coins, these are the only 2 I'd recommend to a first time crypto investor.

Aye. There's a small issue with objectivity on here. Hardly anyone is going to have a straightforward answer without touting what they've dipped into.

Bitcoin - For sure most likely to succeed. Definitely a long term investment.
Namecoin - Good ideals, stable coin. Would look into, especially if net neutrality becomes a reality.
Hyperstake - I personally enjoy this coin and the community as well as the POS rate. I see it going places, but who knows? Still a fairly new coin. (around 20% every 10 days if you stake then. Max of 60% in 3o days)
Blackcoin - Bithalo, just overall a clean coin.
Nubits - My wild card pick, its tie to the USD makes it interesting, may attract investors looking for something familiar yet different.

From what I can see, there's only a few viable long term investments (alt) coins.

Monero/XMR, seems to be very popular. If the development team can deliver, then I see an interesting/long future with this one.

XC, although a bit "scatter-brained", seems to be diverging itself into many different sectors(All revolving around anonymity), which is a good thing, and if the cards are played right, it should have an interesting/long future.

For longterm, the key is that the coin has a real user community, not just us crypto geeks on this forum.
Technological "advances" come every week in this forum, only to be replaced by another one next week.

Please take a look at AppleByte, the crypto supporting artists of all types. We have real users composed of artists & art lovers, and our price is growing steadily.

Whats different in AppleByte in that it supports the arts that another coin can't do to support the same art? IE something like Devcoin where you can actually earn coins via shares for submitting art.

nxt will be a coin to hold, but dont just hold NXT, invest in assets that pay dividends. i get anywhere from 5 to 10 percent a week. so if you had 1 btc in nxt assets you would make .05 to .1 btc a week while still having the 1 btc value in your assets which you can sell.

You will have to define long term. If that means 2-3 years, then maybe yes, there are above Crypto as mentioned above. If you want to hold a coin beyond that, then I am sorry, I don't think there is anything now which can match the capability of BTC. Most of these shit coins are only useful for 3-6 months. You best bet would be to look for asset/commodity backed coins like SYNC, URO, CANN etc.

Also, if you do want to consider investments, you might just consider something else apart from cryptocurrency. Most of the coins are not good as a long term investment option. And rather than being disappointed, you might just invest in a physical product like gold, for which either the prices will keep going up or fall only a bit. IMO that will be a much safer investment.

For sure... I am invested heavily in gold as a long term investment. I'm not going to invest much in alt currencies, but I feel like they have a lot of potential, most of my crypto investment will be in bitcoin though.

I don't trust any altcoin so far.

Here's my motto: IF A COIN IS TRADED WITH BITCOIN IT'S POSSIBLE SCAM, If you can buy a coin with flat money but bitcoin, then I can say it's ok to invest. So far only litecoin was able to do this rule of mine.

It's 5 months later... which is about 3 years in crypto (according to "dog years" criteria).  I have a couple follow-up comments about this topic about long term crypto investments.  I actually used some spare BTC to buy AppleByte (ABY) on Bittrex earlier today.  Also this topic was started on 16 Oct 2014 - on that day Unobtanium (UNO) was trading around 0.0060 BTC.  Should be interesting to see what happens in the next 5-6 months.
