I wonder how many other computers are mining bitcoins, installed by some trusted tech who knows that his client doesn't know anything about computers, having the whole relationship based on trust. If for some reason I needed a dedicated server to run some company, I may not know that bitcoins are being mined on the machine, nor pay attention to the electric bill.

And now for the Rest of the Story ~ Paul Harvey

IT Admin was issued a memo to report to the CFO's office.

CFO inquires: "How much money are we talking here?"

IT Admin: "100's of Thousands"

CFO: "Your not fired, but lets do it covertly and boost the Companies bottom line."

IT Admin: "Yes, sir."

These kinds of cases regarding unauthorised installations of distributed computing software pop up every now and then.

Here's one from 2001 regarding Distributed.Net's RC5-64 cracking challenge.

These problems are compounded by Bitcoin's underground image in the popular media (Silk Road), and frequent hacking, theft, or incompetence (MtGox, Bitcoinica x2, the Polish exchange, etc).  Fortunately in this case the ABC employee just got a slap on the wrist.
