Title: Shaving discussion
Post by: yasiel.puig on October 20, 2014, 06:55:00 PM
What kind of razor do you use?

Do you use shaving soap, creme or foam?

How often do you shave?

Anyone else use a double-edged safety razor? If so what make and model do you use? (Merkur Futur)

What kind of blades do you use?

I use a safety razor.  I use hot water (no shaving cream, soap, gel or foam).  Thanks to Jeffrey Tucker's rant against the great shaving cream scam I am free from that awful product.  http://mises.org/daily/4043/The-Sh aving-Cream-Racket

Merkur DE cheapest model at the time
Derby Extra super stainless
Barbasol soothing aloe beard buster (seemingly with the least crap in it of any affordable shave foam)

Never often enough, I want noncicatricial alopecia universalis or to get caught in a meteor shower.

Only use BIC blue disposables no foam or soap and shave once every 2 days.

Usually I get a a few shaving kits ever christmas and just rotate. I'm using a shick hydro 5 right now, its much smoother than a more expensive gillete. I just use soap maybe every other day and I leave my blades in alcohol, they last a lot longer. I probably go through 1 blade a month with the gf also sharing it.

Thanks for the link.

I personally stay away from foam - I've been using soap instead but will at some point try and use only water.

I've heard of people shaving with cold water (the soldiers who fought in WWI had no choice) without issue so it must be possible.

I hate shaving cos it always fucks up my skin, but I might try this way and see if it's any better. I've just been using a Gillette Mac 3 since I was a kid, but I might go for a traditional razor and blades as apparently they're better, much cheaper and last a hell of a lot longer.

When you say that is messes with your skin do you mean that you cut yourself or it leaves bumps (or both)?

If you're getting bumps then a DE might help. I have sensitive skin but with good technique and the right equipment I get a much cleaner, less irritable shave.

What's a DE? I don't really get cuts or spots, but just like tiny slightly red blotches and my skin just doesn't feel nice - quite tight. It goes away after a day or two, but I also hate looking like this:

When I say "DE" = Double Edged Safety Razor.

I strongly recommend it.

Why? Because it is unmanly? And pointless.

Yeah, if you don't get your pubes caught in your zipper on a daily basis, you're not manly!

My pubes are not that long, if you have hair long enough to be able to catch on your zipper I am wonder how your bird survived all that years without harm.

Surely being concerned with another man's genitalia is a lot more 'unmanly'.

Unless you mean 'manly' as understood by Mr Fleece Johnson...

Loving these new Baili Super Stainless/Blue DE blades (but would still rather not to have any hair to shave at all). They are almost paper-thin, and compared to Derby Extra, seem to keep an edge longer. 200 for $11.75 can't be beat.
