Title: Escrow and GPG key?
Post by: farjia on October 24, 2014, 09:21:30 AM
What exactly is a gpg key and why does (mostly) escrowers show their gpg key ? What's the benefit of it?

Sorry for the noob question. Be gentle! :)

First of all it is PGP key, not GPG key. PGP means Pretty GooD Privacy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy). In non-technical term, PGP is used to verify an identity in cryptographic way. Escrow people use it so that public can independently verify whether the message posted by the escrow is really coming from him or a identity stealer.

I believe farjia was really asking about GPG key, not PGP.

For example, DannyHamilton has GPG key fingerprint of 87706042BBCECD50600CEF47DE9CBC0020CA5E05 listed on OTC (http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewgpg.php?nick=DannyHamilton) and you can find it on his profile page https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=60820 as well.

PGP is a data encryption and decryption computer program that provides cryptographic privacy and authentication for data communication.

I am confused now, some escrows show gpg key while others show pgp key. I still don't understand what's the use of it. And how can I get one?

PGP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy is the overall schema for how this is done. GPG is a specific program that uses PGP, put out by Gnu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Privacy_Guard.
