I learnt to type 55 WPM on this bitch, till I got in the second year of typing on an IBM balled-typewrite  and upped it to ~80 WPM. Now, I'm at ~60 WPM.

I had like 15 WPM, now I'm around 25, I'm just learning the technique here. http://www.typingweb.com/tutor/courses/

What's mechanical or different about it compared to others? It just looks like a keyboard with LEDs to me. It's been a while since I used anything other than a laptop anyway.

I think of it like the "organic" label. I don't think mechanical keyboards are inherently better, but they usually have awesome features over their bland counterparts: no or minimal ghosting (can press more than a few keys at once), far less likely to stick, more durable, better tactile feedback (keys actually "click" when you trigger a signal), and weightier keys. Typing accuracy is generally improved by using mechanical keyboards.

The lights can be turned off, each key has its own light.

My keyboard has Brown Cherrys good for typing and gaming.

The sound it's just amazing.

I think with this kind of keyboards I went full retarded.

Just love then

I concur. Mechanical keyboards are the best. I type at about 100WPM and there's nothing more satisfying than the sound of the keys going click-clack so fast. It makes me feel like I'm getting serious work done. :)

wouldnt those keyboards catch on fire, if it was used for a long time. like due to heat?

Thing with mechanical keyboards is they are super loud, it's like the 1990s again. If they could make a quiet mechanical keyboard I would be interested, I prefer to not have everyone hear me clacking away when I type. Haha.

most of those are for gaming right, outside from that i dont see it any benefit.

They do make quiet ones (http://www.amazon.com/Matias-Corporation-Mechanical-Keyboard-FK302QPC/dp/B009ZRR92G), but being able to hear exactly when it clicks is one of the larger benefits of them - or maybe they've accomplished that still with the quieter ones. The clicking sound isn't like the ancient beige serial keyboards with the goofy elasto-cord with the very dull but loud sound, but is generally quick and precise, a bit more like a typewriter (but without the loud belt sound.... or maybe that was just mine... :D).

I think the only reason people like these keyboards are for nostalgia purposes. They do sound nice and whenever I use one it does seem to feel more reassuring for some reason, but I think it's just a physiological thing more than anything else.

Well... I would keep using a common one, except that I really want a keyboard that doesn't have ghosting, that would help me a lot.
Using a mechinical one makes too much noise.

I found one of these chunky old style keyboards in my attic the over day. I plugged it in and was surprised to find it still works. The sound they make does feel more reassuring and I seem to be able to type better with them too. They look very retro though, even the modern ones.

They just have a better response rate, even better than ultrapolling USB membrane keyboard.

What kind of switches would be the best for typing? Really liked the look of the Ducky DK9008P Premier keyboard.  :)

If you don't mind switches being loud, pick a Cherry Blue. Otherwise choose a Cherry Brown which are a bit quieter than the blue ones. Browns are also better suited to gaming than Blue Cherrys.

Ducky makes quality keyboards so going with them isn't a bad idea.

Wouldn't really mind the extra noise, but is there also a difference in how hard you have to push down on the key? Brown sounds like a nice middleground perhaps?

Yes, blue switches require a bit more force 50g and peak 60g, while brown switches require 45g and 55g peak force.
Cherry Brown is indeed best overall switch.

When I had my full computer in working-order my DASKeyboard was great. Posted above.

To OP, nice kb, but still only non-RGB.

Same, after owning a mechanical keyboard for the last couple years I don't see myself every going to back to membrane keys.

Can never go back.

I don't like the double-sound blue keys make per key press. On the other hand, brown keys make a lower pitched singular sound per key press with less force. Mechanical keyboards are awesome! But, they can get loud, unless you've trained yourself to touch-type by not pressing all the way down using the least force possible which you can learn to do with mechanical keyboards!  ;)

Don't you guys find them annoyingly loud? Is it really worth the tradeoff for a slightly faster response time or the ability to touch-type?

Professional gamers will say yes, but at a casual level I believe that a high polling rate common keyboard is enough.

I heard of an interesting use case recently. Apparently, mechanical keyboards are excellent for the deaf due to the increased tactile feedback, dramatically improving their rate and accuracy in some cases.

Actually not.  They're really useful for learning to type since the tactile feedback will clearly tell you when you've done the keystrokes.  I actually prefer not to use mechanical keyboards now since I can type relatively proficiently at an alright speed (85 consistently) without the usage of mechanical keyboards.
