You need to make two partions of the drive, and then install Windows on one, and whatever linux-dist you wanna use on the other. I think Ubuntus Wubi installer could install them on the same partion or something like that, you could check it out. Yes, Wubi creates a file on the Windows partition which will be mounted as a drive in Linux. It has slightly less performance and I think there are problems if the shutdown does not finish correct (e.g. power failure). What you also could do is running Linux in a VM like Virtualbox. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads You get less performance but depending on what you want to do it might be more than enough. Virtualbox is the easiest way to enter the world of Linux. Wubi would be something in the middle. And repartitioning the hard drive with GParted is a bit more difficult. So if you are a beginner go for Virtualbox. If you need performance and stability you should go for GParted and than install Linux on a separate partition. Use a USB drive and get your important files on it so they cant be blown away. GParted to create the partitions on the disk. You can then choose your OS using the tool GRUB.
