Yes it is.
You need to make two partions of the drive, and then install Windows on one, and whatever linux-dist you wanna use on the other.
I think Ubuntus Wubi installer could install them on the same partion or something like that, you could check it out.

You could use GParted Live CD to partition your hard drive even after you already installed Windows.

Yes, Wubi creates a file on the Windows partition which will be mounted as a drive in Linux.
It has slightly less performance and I think there are problems if the shutdown does not finish correct (e.g. power failure).

What you also could do is running Linux in a VM like Virtualbox.

You get less performance but depending on what you want to do it might be more than enough.

Just building off what he said, as he knows what he's talking about, there are walkthrough tutorials that can be found through google search. Try to follow the ones from reputable sights though.

you can install windows and run linux from CD or DVD or any removeable disk like usb flash (easily)
and as torusJKL said, i suggest you give Virtualbox a try it is so cool

Refering to my post above.

Virtualbox is the easiest way to enter the world of Linux.
Wubi would be something in the middle.
And repartitioning the hard drive with GParted is a bit more difficult.

So if you are a beginner go for Virtualbox.
If you need performance and stability you should go for GParted and than install Linux on a separate partition.

You don't have to partition your hard drive just place your Ubuntu iso file in a folder and open wubi(both should be in same folder) to install Ubuntu .  :)

I might suggest since reading this make sure to backup if you try anything.   Use a USB drive and get your important files on it so they cant be blown away.

Yes it is possible to run windows 7 and linux on the same HD. GParted to create the partitions on the disk. You can then choose your OS using the tool GRUB.
