Post by: wladston on May 29, 2012, 01:04:20 AM
Hello,

Today we are launching a service that might be interesting for Newbies : Bitquestion.

You can earn your first bitcoins by answering questions on the site, or use those coins you got to ask your hard questions.

Service url : http://www.bitquestion.com

Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCtjnPOsngg&feature=player_embedded

I would love to hear suggestions, questions and comments about the service.

The idea is interesting and the site looks nice.
Is the dot in "฿ 1.800" ( see http://www.bitquestion.com/question/1 ) meant as a decimal separator or as a thousands separator?

@hm it's just a decimal separator :)

This certainly seems to be a promising venture. Here's hoping it takes off!

Here's a suggestion for you: Let me set a list of tags that I can help with on my profile. Say I set "bitcoin", "coding", and "lasagna" as tags on my profile. Then, whenever someone asks a question with any or all of those tags, you send me an email asking if I can answer it.

Kansattica, great idea. We'll add that to our "todo" list.

I really like this idea. Kind of like some other sites I've seen like this, but with bitcoins. And I second Kansattica's suggestion. :)

That's funny. I was thinking about this exact idea a week ago. Good job. Because I'm way too fucking lazy to make it. This should bring more people to BTC if people get to see that they can earn money for answering shit. Plus, those who want answers can offer up BTC. Fucking brilliant dude! Great minds shit alike.

Edit:
Got some questions-
How do you withdraw bitcoins and how secure are the deposits? Just wondering.

@TravisE : Thanks man :)

@Faisal7 : It's cool that you like the idea :) we're waiting for your questions. About your doubts, you can withdraw from your bitquestion account at any time by providing only the amount you wish to withdraw and a valid bitcoin address. Transactions are sent out instantly. As long as you keep your password safe and protect your connection from man-in-the middle attacks, your bitcoins should be safe. We are taking all the measures we can to avoid being hacked. If the project gets popular, we'll add SSL to increase the security as well.

That's a good idea! Also added to out To Do. Right now our numbers aren't so impressive, so we'll leave that towards the end :)

Right now I'm working with bitcoind to accept zero-confirmation deposits.

I created a question on there and it took two fees. I did not understand.

May 31, 2012, 1:36 a.m.   Debit   Question #5   -0.00090000   Created question #5
May 31, 2012, 1:36 a.m.   Debit   Bitquestion administration   -0.00010000   Fee for question #5

also, another suggestion would be making search engine friendly URLs. rather than http://www.bitquestion.com/question/5

This is a common meme, but it hasn't been necessary for years. The search engines are more sophisticated than you imagine.

Sure, if you put keywords in the URL the search engines will notice these. But if you don't do that, the search engines will grab keywords from other places like headings. Keywords in the URL are at the expense of keywords elsewhere.

One transfers went directly to the Question itself, the other went to the site administration.

I have a couple of comments.

- The "Post a comment" button would work better if it was placed after the last comment, i.e. in the place where the comment would appear

- The phrase "Without author's intervention, this question will auto-accept" would make more sense if the wording was changed to "Without author's intervention, this answer will be auto-accepted", and moved from the question box to the box of the answer to which it applies. Also, you could put that phrase into italics or into smaller type, so that it doesn't look like part of the text posted by the user.

Overall, the site seems to work smoothly.

@ribuck, thanks for your comments. The position of the post a comment button indeed could improve. Added that to our todo list.

About that warning message, we will make it clearer. We can't place it on the answer, because at that moment, the answer is private and only the person who posted the answer and the person who posted the question will be able to view the box with it. Maybe we can post the answer box, but without showing the contents if it is still private. Anyways, that is indeed something we must work on, thanks for pointing it.

This is nice, all it needs now is more people asking/answering questions. It's just too bad that it has to take place in a context of people that are already very intelligent, or at least on the forefront of technology and know the ways of googling to figure things out themselves. Perhaps later on, when and if bitcoin (hopefully of course!) takes off and gains a more "casual" user-base, this will become a good place for its initial users to answer questions. I definitely wish this venture well.

Also wlad, I believe you have a typo in your signature :)

thanks, changed my signature. Well, the site can be used by both tech people and non-tech people. What takes away the interesting questions from the frivolous ones is the bounty. Let's hope more people will use it, yes :)

Just released a new feature to the site -- accepting zero confirmations!

Now you can see funds posted on your account almost immediately after you send your transaction. And you can use then to ask questions!

A question created with zero confirmation funds will be on the pending state, and will not receive any answers proposals. The question will show only on the "Recent" list. After funds used to create the question have one or more confirmation, the question will automatically move to the open state as usual.

And you can only withdraw funds that have 6 or more confirmations, now.

So now it's even safer for Bitquestion, and blazing fast for all of you to ask your question!

Here's a bug. If a question has two answers pending, it's not possible to reject the second pending answer (clicking the "reject" button produces a "Whoops, we just had a server error" message.

For example, I can't reject answer number 27 here:
http://bitquestion.com/question/10 (http://bitquestion.com/question/10)

I would exclude tags that are formed of common words, i.e.: from

A tag cloud would be a nice thing; not just the popular ones.

How about each user could define his own tags where he considers himself to have knowledge. Say maybe max. 10 tags to prevent tagspam. Thiese then could be used to notify this user if questions with any of those tags are posted.

I.e. user ABC sets his tags for "food", "coffee" and "bitcoin". User XYZ tags his question with "bitcoin". User ABC gets an email notification with a link to that question.

@Newar, yes, we are going to do just that. Also we're going to improve the tag listing on the left with a better weight algorithm. The accepting zero-confirmation feature was a HUGE work, new features should be easier to implement :)

Right now we are testing answers ratings, afterwards we'll implement this feature. You'll be able to follow as many tags as you like, and also the "ALL TAGS" meta-tag, since the service doesn't have much questions now.

In the future, we are going to automatically calculate what kind of an expert each user is, based on his experience with the site.

Cheers. In the meanwhile I did read the thread (I know ::) ) and realised that Kansattica suggested it already.

One other thing I noticed: http://bitquestion.com/question/11 (http://bitquestion.com/question/11) did not show up via the "Open questions" button on the top, but only via the ">" button at the search. I think it's because wladston marked it as private? Would be better if all questions available for answering would show via the green button.

Someone suggested that already, we are analysing. Our idea is to raise more attention to questions that are without answer (the green ones) over the ones that are in process of being accepted ( the orange ones). There are no private questions, they are either in the "open", "discussing" or "closed" category.

What do you guys think of it ?

Thanks!

Unfortunately the idea didn't catch up :( No one is using the site. That, with the money that I had to pay every month to keep the server up, and led me to the sad decision of shutting down the site.

I've already sent an email for everyone holding positive balance accounts, with information on how to withdraw the funds, or helping me pay the server bill.

Within one week, I'll take any bitcents remaining on the server, use them to help to pay the server bills, and shut down the site.

It has been a great learning experience to build this service. I really tried my best. Let's hope my next one doesn't fail.

Thanks,
