Title: anybody know something about ipad ?
Post by: WEB slicer on October 31, 2014, 08:10:02 PM
i just got one for my sister. never used an ipad before. first thing i usually do with a computer is wipe the HD and install fresh OS. i noticed you can update the firmware through itunes. will updating the firmware also reload the OS or is that a separate process?

Updating the firmware is updating the OS. You just click the button to update over WiFi, or plug it into a computer with iTunes to install the update. No further steps are needed. You do not need to wipe the HD.

is the firmware the OS itself or are these two separate pieces of software? i don't just want to update firmware i also want to wipe the drive and have a fresh OS.

Updating is updating the OS to the latest version of it.

The firmware and OS are the same thing.  In iTunes you should be able to wipe it and iOS will automatically update in the process.  I recommend looking at jailbreaking before you do if you're interested at all, as you can't go back once it's updated

Here (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414) is a guide to restoring to factory settings

i already saw the support page but was unsure if the firmware and the OS are the same. not familiar with apple IOS i use windows and i know firmware for the parts of a computer and the OS are two completely different things. do these ipads require drivers? i'm assuming they do but i know there are alot of differences from windows so figured i would ask.

iOS devices are pretty much plug and play.  I've never had to worry about drivers or anything like that, it just works

that is awesome. i wish windows was like that. it has basic integrated drivers but never graphic or sound card drivers for real hardware.

firmware and operating system are separate, with iOS devices. But unless you want to jailbreak it, which you dont want to do for someone else, you wont see the details. Apple will hide it to you and update both woth itunes.

and welcome to the world of modern OSs.

windows is so bloated and wasteful.

dont think of anything that you are doing in terms of Windows. Dont think of drivers or even firmware for that matter.
just use the device. if it needs an update (whether its an app or an OS revision) just update it. simple.

dont overthink it. you've crossed that bridge already.

enjoy your device.

It lets you run apps that Apple refuses to approve for the app store as well as customize your device a ton.  Also can pirate apps instead of paying for them

If Wi-Fi is connected, you can upgrade the iOS on iPhone and iPad 8 without a computer or iTunes. Access to Settings> General> Software Update and click on Download and Install iOS in windows 8.
Then, you must agree to the terms of use of Apple and wait for the phone to download the installation file. Up about 1,1GB file on the device, but Apple requires 4,7GB free memory on the iPad mini and iPhone 5s 5,8GB. Installation is complete and restart the computer, you swipe through each page to configure iOS 8 to use.
