Title: Unexpected GLBSE downtime.
Post by: glbse on May 31, 2012, 09:15:17 AM
Our apologies, but we had to bring the site down for a bit while we investigate a potential problem. It will be back up as soon as possible. Please bear with us as we check things out.

At this point we don't believe the issue is on our end, but we are continuing to proceed as if it is until we are more confident in our assessment. As a result this downtime will continue for now. Sorry for any inconvenience.

The site will be back up shortly.

A user's account was compromised because their login details had been acquired outside of the GLBSE system. As we couldn't be sure this was the case immediately, we brought the site down until a thorough investigation could take place.

2-factor authentication would have prevented this from occurring, and we would encourage all users who have not activated that feature to do so.

We again apologize for the downtime, but feel it was well warranted in the circumstances.

Could you maybe announce this kind of messages always in one place?

One forum thread, a twitter account, your blog - anything, where a person could go when GLBSE is down to read that someone is working on the problem...

Because no communication is really frustrating.
And looking of the right thread on the forum does not make it less frustrating - unless you found it :)

I tried to enable 2FA but it seems to be only for smart phones & I don't use one, could you make it available for Yubi keys or even just a 4 digit PIN to enter via a drop down menu would be good, thanks

It was easy enough to find this thread on the forum once I saw that GLBSE was down for a while, in fact it was just where one would expect it & also near the top of recent unread posts in the Bitcoin forum as a whole, np

Perhaps glbse needs a mailing list...

Twitter status account and mailing list is a great idea, I'll get to work adding them.

There is a desktop Google Auth application http://code.google.com/p/gauth4win/downloads/detail?name=gauth4win.rar

Although I don't know how secure this app is(I've not checked it out).

Guys please ensure that you are not using the same password on different websites, this is the primary cause of accounts getting compromised.

Again, sorry for the downtime but it's better safe than sorry.

Just a question but what happens when I lose my phone(or flash a new rom?). Is their a easy way to reset the authentication ?

If its possible to customize Cloudflare's "This website is offline" page, adding a link over to the status page would be very helpful.

If you lose it no, no easy way.

Best thing to do is write down the code.

Found on the internet that the best way is to take a screenshot of the QR code and store it somewhere safe. (code is the same as QR code)
If you lose your phone later or want to pair an other device just scan the code again and your all set.

Oh no. I've scanned it to my phone, and the QR-code has disappeared from my settings page. What should I do to get the code? The GA app is still working in my phone, I just want a backup as I flash my phone regularly.

Deactiate the GA again en then reanable it. Only way to do it. ;)

There is already Bitcoin Global (https://twitter.com/#!/bitcoinglobal) on twitter. It seems reasonably official. Any confirmation of that here or on website or on blog linked at the bottom of the website?
