Title: Who uses bitcoin?
Post by: hsz on November 06, 2014, 06:11:28 PM
The researchers collected Google Trends search query data from January 2011 to July 2013 for all US states, looking for terms related to bitcoin and its possible clientele.

Based on this data, the researchers constructed four possible categories of users for bitcoin: programming enthusiasts, speculative investors, libertarians and cybercriminals.

Illegal activity and computer programming were positively associated with bitcoin use, but there was no association for libertarian ideology or investment motives.

Previous research was also referenced, leading to the conclusion that the three main motives driving bitcoiners were curiosity, profit and political ideology. Yelowitz and Wilson warn that some of the correlations were “inherently difficult” to measure due to the sensitivity of bitcoin activity.

I use it to buy socks, camping gear, food,... No wonder I was not mentioned in the article.  ::)

The people who write these stories are just interested in ad revenue. Of course they try to pick (or invent) the most sensational and shocking topics. That is why there is no mention of normal sales of boring goods and services.

You were looking for sensation right?
Now, I just have to influence the pharmacy to accept BTC, my life would be complete.

If you can create a website with online jobs for mom, students, and such. Maybe 2-3 hours a day and pay them in Bitcoins, I am pretty sure the Bitcoin community just created a tiny economy on the Internet.

There are some sites already existed but I won't name them. They accept credit cards and USD.

When the internet started off, a lot of people thought it was associated with nothing but pornography.  ;D

Natural evolution.  When something new comes up, they always drum up the worst in it, until it becomes mainstream.  Hopefully one day we will see BTC hit the mainstream, and we can look at all the negativity and laugh.

If only there were a global network of computers that allowed people to buy and sell goods and services from anyone in the world without having to physically be in the same location (or even the same country). Someone should invent something like that. Oh wait...

I am not sure how you could potentially spend your money/bitcoin on specific ideals. I would also think that people will invest in bitcoin only after learning about it and realizing it's potential, they will probably not want to invest in it right off the bat

They researched themself, they're criminals.

Currently many peoples don't see any advantages of using BTC.
They want to use debit cards, get credits and just life.
BTC doesn't provide anything which could be usefull rfor them... sad to say :(

The technology itself is not the problem. It is the motives and mindset of the some of the current users. They start off talking about the great ideals of decentralising  power away from central banking cartels and depoliticising the money supply along with the technical advantages of the system itself but then they see the big carrot dangling in front of their eyes and start thinking."Maybe I can get rich here?" and start having hallucinations cashing out in fiat and heading to las vegas while the others start making scammy shitcoins.Scummers and scammers are always going to attach themselves onto anything that is convenient to their needs like parasites attach themselves to other creatures but the idea of decentralising and depoliticising, demonopolizing is a great goal. The one that was truly intended.
