Title: Brand new, done some reading..
Post by: Boggletek on May 16, 2011, 08:47:53 PM
I have an Intel Xeon 2333 MHZ with a 9800GT 1 GB

I am completely new to the scene, I've spent a few hours reading now but I'm having trouble how to set up a good miner with a good pool. I'm also unclear about my ability to use OPENCL. Apparently my graphics card is capable but the graphics card drivers don't reflect it yet? I'm unsure...

Looking for some advice on how to set up a windows box with a good pool.

Thanks guys!

Sadly, your rig is not enough for mining to be profitable for you. Now, you need an ATI/AMD card, preferably Radeon HD 5970, or 5870 at very least. nVidia's may be good for other stuff, but they suck at mining Bitcoin.

5870 at very least

Cheap 5850s make great mining cards.

Is there a known reason that ATI's cards are so much faster for this purpose? Seems odd that there's such a stark disparity, especially when Nvidia's CUDA is often the platform of choice for scientific number crunching.

The Bitcoin wiki has a lot of information on why ATI is superior to nVidia and on how to build a good "Mining Rig."

This to be exact.
