Title: Setting up a bitcoin city?
Post by: ponzinomics reloaded on November 11, 2014, 06:12:34 AM
Hi, a question that comes to my mind, maybe you have already discussed about it. Is there any city in the world where you can make a fairly normal life just in bitcoin?

I figure out that cities in Argentina or Venezuela, which are closer both to have hyperinflation on their respective currencies, would be good candidates. Despite their politicians are not the best representation of liberty.

Also, for example any third world country which decides to go fully for bitcoin, it can probably build a good economy full of entrepreneurs from every place in the world in maybe 5 years. Starting from nothing, just opening its barriers.

Other possible case would be a city having a libertarian major which decides to declare his city as bitcoin city, maybe after a ballot.

Another alternative would be a consortia of bitcoin companies joining to offer this alternative to some of the previous options.

Do you see any option for it? Or does all the countries control their political representatives to forbid this option?

I am very interested in the results of the Switzerland Gold Initiative as it can force SNB to put its hands out of the Monetary Policy, but I am afraid they would have to pass for a period of settlement and maybe collapse of some of their companies.

good idea,

but firstly, you have to find a piece of land, it does not belong to any country  :-\

I don't think it is possible. The most of the ppl don't know about bitcoin and have faith in the utility of it. The bitcoin is still 5 years old and in the early phase.

But maybe it would not be bad, releasing such an offer from the bitcoin community to the world, just to see if any city could be interested?

Maybe you do not need a city without country, but a city where his citizens, or major, has enough rights to make this decision...

Think in a city in Laos, Buthan, Armenia, Namibia..... who knows?

this has been discussed before in the mindsets of
1. concentration camps ( a place the bitcoiners can go to and live together )
2. lobbying that countries government ( costing billions to convince them )
3. promotional airdrop just for 15 minute fame or to grab profitable donations from community

yet it is much easier and cheaper to achieve this. firstly you do not need to spend billions on lobbying. all you need is a team of people who actually have motivation to go to these small island countries and pretty much set each business up with bitcoin.

countries with less than 50k population have only a few thousand retailers at most, many have only a few hundred. so a dedicated team of 20 people could get a whole island accepting bitcoin within a couple months.

by simply having the ability to receive and send bitcoin makes them a bitcoin country. and then the businesses and employees will automatically see the benefits in being paid in bitcoins and then use their bitcoin wage to spend in their country, creating the economic loop.

coinapult are doing an air drop in 2015 but do not seem to be doing much in regards to motivating businesses to accept bitcoin prior to the airdrop. thus they are missing out on a transitional period that cold produce better success, if they simply put more effort into the preparations.

simply convincing user acceptance is just a gimmick/pump dump for fame or profit, but getting retailers on an island to accept it first, give usefulness to the users, then and only then introducing users to bitcoin, will ensure the long term use of bitcoin on that island.

though i do not like the idea of a single country being made into a bitcoin centre. as that brings bitcoin into a land jurisdiction as oppose to international freedom, i feel that it is possible to get these small countries to be fully bitcoin acceptable in every shop people visit, as a stepping stone of expansion across the world.

Small Australian City Plans for a Big Bitcoin Economy

A plan to build the "world's largest" local bitcoin-based economy is underway in the city of Launceston, Australia, with support from local businesses and even government.

Project organizers say the compact Tasmanian city with a population of 106,000 will make a good high-density testing ground for bitcoin. The plan is aimed to cover various levels of the business supply chain, allowing users to both receive and spend their bitcoins, rather than simply converting them to Australian dollars.

A notable part of the 'Launceston Launch' plan would be to have the local government, the Launceston City Council, accept bitcoin for taxes and rates. At least two members of the 12-member council have shown support for the idea.

Snapcard is pushing a serious merchant adoption in San Francisco. It could make San Francisco the closest thing we can get to a bitcoin city.
