UPDATE (7/12)  I'm selling records again!  Email for an upgraded CSV that includes a shell script for easy searching!


I thought I'd offer a BTC bridge to the world of vinyl records, both new artists and vintage.  There are also plenty of re-pressings of classic records.  

Something about using bitcoins to buy vinyl just seemed like a good idea.

I'll be shipping out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.


Each record's price in BTC will be individually negotiated based upon current Mt. Gox exchanges.

ClearCoin is recommended for all transactions.

Ahm, so why is the 3 day waiting period different from just shipping right away? If you wait 3 days so you can cope with a market swing during that period, who's going to protect you from a market swing the minute after you ship the record?

On a lighter note, how feasible / expensive would shipping to Europe be, if at all possible?

The three day waiting period is negotiable, but the general idea is to provide, albeit a small, protection against the wild price swings.  All the while you have the record 'on reserve'. 

I'd be open to receiving a single bitcoin to reserve the record, then three days later the final price is agreed upon.  A full refund is possible at any point until the record ships.

There is currently no website for BitVinyl specifically right now, but judging on interest from here there may be one shortly.

Shipping rates are comparable to what it would cost in US dollars.  I'll post a more accurate rate shortly.

I think the hold period and asking for more btc will cause customer anger.  Just Gox your btc daily if you are worried about price swings.

Just received the records I ordered. They arrived in the condition that Scottingham described and were relatively well packaged. It was a pleasure doing business with him. I'm going to have to find a bigger CD player though because these won't fit.

Looks like a great service I have to see if my grandparents want any.

In the age of mp3 collections over 50k it's great to have a collection of tangible music that you *really* love.

CDs are nothing but an antiquated form of digital music storage.  Vinyl offers something unique.  The sound is analog, not an approximation.  If you get a virgin record the sound is unparalleled (though this is debatable).  If you listen to it countless times it does start to wear out, but those pops and crackles are *your* pops crackles, unique to your record.  The records become old friends.

I see the future of music as having a purposeful divide between digital and analog.  Many new artists today are putting out vinyl versions of their albums.  I personally think a winning combination for a band is to offer mp3s for free, then charge for vinyl and lossless digital.  That way, people can hear the music, and if they fall in love with it they can own their own tangible copy. 

Plus, since records are much bigger than CDs the cover art has much more potential.  Large posters can be included without the need for 20+ creases.  The whole medium is much more conducive to a more enriching art experience.


Perhaps I should start offering turntables as well...


In other news, BitVinyl.com is up!  Right now there isn't much, but shortly you will be able to download a fresh CSV directly from the site! :D

They are, but how does 25% sound?  This is still a new service so anything that helps to build the network of trust is worth it to me!

Is anybody wanting to buy records but is hesitant due to the massive upswing in BTC value?

I understand this is not an ideal situation for a BTC merchant, are there any suggestions on how to address this?

If you set your prices according to a 24hr average exchange rate, your customers would have a little breathing room to buy back the bitcoins on an exchange and avoid feeling burned should the exchange rate increase. I believe that's what we agreed upon during our transaction. But that's up to the customer. Keep in mind that you're peddling a somewhat esoteric medium to the users of a rather esoteric currency, many of whom may actually have an appreciation for the sound of second or third order 128kbps mp3 transcodes over anything else (http://radar.oreilly.com/2009/03/the-sizzling-sound-of-music.html). It's a sick, sad world, I know.
