What would you do?
I am just curious what people would do if they had 1 million BTC but couldn't keep any of it? How would you get rid of it? Would you donate a bunch of it to charities? Would you help out a bunch of homeless people? Would you sell it all and just randomly hand out the money to random people? Let's see what type of answers people will come out with :) Cheers and looking forward to your answers ;)

I would build a dojo, hire the best instructors and give free lessons to everyone.

So I can't keep them , but I can sell them.. ! so I will sell them that will take down the price to bottom and then buy* them back , and then there will be no restriction and I can do whatever I want whether to keep them or not.

Ya I figured that someone would answer like that lol That's all good :) I generally meant that in the end result you couldn't have anything to do with the 1 million BTC that were given to you, but you could dispose of them anyway you wanted so I guess you're technically correct in what you would do with them lol

Step 1: Create charity.
Step 2: 'donate' to charity.
Step 3: Pay myself & employees millions in bonuses every year.
Step 4: Donate barely anything to the actual cause.
Step 5: Act like I'm saving the world when really I'm taking the majority of the money in my pockets and spending it on the Bugatti veryron I have parked outside.

Only joking, but that's basically what most charities do.

I would probably look into investing in Bitcoin related companies.

+1 to that response lol That is what a majority of "charities" do and I like the investing in Bitcoin related companies idea :) It would be beneficial to maybe look into using the BTC to adopting masses of society into being more knowledgeable about what Bitcoin is and how it works :) Kudos to that my friend ;)

Ya that's all good and well but would you do anything helpful with the money you received from selling them? Or would you just keep it all for yourself?

A person can survive not only survive but fulfill every reasonable wish if s/he has in 10million USD and live their lives happily and peaceful . so 10million$ is just fraction of 1million btc so what to do with rest of btc , you can't throw them away just to get rid of them as mentioned by OP maybe donation is only positive way out.

I would really just love to walk around and hand people $1000 cash and see the expressions on their faces when I tell them "Here have $1000 on me :)" lol That would be just priceless

I would buy some silver wallets load them up with Bitcoins and drop the coins in random places.

I wouldn't trust that many BTC to be spent properly by any entity/entities that I had nothing to do with, so I would have no choice but to send them to 1BitcoinEaterAddressDontSendf59kuE.

I would still create a system to benefit me, if its not bitcoins.

eg: use all 1 million bitcoin into real estate, then structure a royalty deal per estate.

Fund education; education has become too expensive. Spending even 100 BTC on myself would leave me happy for a long time, but being able to help lots of others obtain a much-desired education would be great.

I don't see this event possibly happening. There is just no situation in which I would not keep them.

Anyways there are a lot of things that you could do with it. It depends, if you wanted to trick the system and still have the money or just be a 'good guy'.

In the event that you win a million, but the company doesn't give it to you; rather, lets you choose how to distribute it, this event could happen!

That's kind of where I was going with this thread was it was like that movie back in the day where maybe it was Chevy Chase gets an inheritance but he has to show that he doesn't want the money and has to spend a certain amount in a day or he doesn't get the inheritance. Does anyone remember the movie I'm talking about? It might not have been Chevy Chase but another popular actor from his time of popular movies lol But ya I could see an event where a company chooses someone to distribute the winnings :) That would actually be a pretty interesting experiment to see how someone would distribute that kind of wealth :) Good answer :)

Why might I ask would you do that? Any particular reasoning behind giving the BTC to people who are more than a member on here? I'm just curious why you would want to do that?

I would just buy something else thats worth that much in bitcoin.

What I meant was that the majority of charities pay themselves & employees huge amounts in bonuses. I'm unsure about local charities, but the big ones are quite well known for it.

It's interesting how many people would wanna keep it to themselves. With ~$400,000,000, you wouldn't want to donate any of it. I'd be happy with half of that amount, let alone the whole million BTC

Uh dude, sorry to break your bubble, but I think you're grossly underestimating how much experience is required to run a "big" charity.

Take the World Wildlife Fund (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Fund_for_Nature) for example: you're dealing with 5,000,000 supporters, over 100 countries, and €525 million in yearly revenue. Another example is the Red Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Red_Cross_and_Red_Crescent_Movement), with 97 million volunteers, and $3.6 billion in revenue.

You can't just leave some high school student looking for volunteer hours in charge. It takes a special sort of person with a special sort of expertise to run an global operation of that scale, and these people are hard to come across.

The salaries that the CEOs of these charities are fair, compared to what their peers are earning as CEO of Tesco or ExxonMobil.

Anything above the 10.000 BTC, I seriously don't care about, might as well give it away to every btc address with >0 balance, reversely proportional to the amout of bitcoin it has.

See that's what I found funny as well is how many people would try and try and try to just keep it for themselves and not share any of it :) I mean 400 million dollars is a lot of cheddar and you could very comfortably live off 200 million for the rest of your life.  I kind of just wanted to use this question as an experiment to see what kind of answers I would get from people but I also guess I should have stated that no matter what you do with the BTC whether it be sell it off for money you still cannot keep any of the 1 million BTC or what you get for the 1 million BTC. lol but still quite interesting that the majority of people that have posted on this thread wouldn't share any of it.

I would probably agree to setting up some charity in my own name, like that one guy mention.

Esp the part where he pays him self and employees lol.

You could easily set up and auction for Bitcoin the U.S marshalls do it everytime they seize them from one of those underground websites lol Just ask them how to do it :)

Any real world auction house will auction off anything especially if it  is worth 400+  million  dollars

I'd feed a few thousand children every day for the next 10 years. (see link in sig).

Then I'd have the rest donated to my military unit to fund medical, dental, and engineering missions for the next 10 years (and get myself promoted to Colonel while doing all that.)

A million BTC is really too much, it would take me several life times to deplete it all responsibly, unless you don't mind me giving away ten thousand at a time.

I'd donate a few to some local government units to build some well paved roads ASAP where they are needed, probably overpaying the workers by a factor of 10.

I'd give a few thousand each (converted to fiat) to every mayor in every city within my region, only to be used to do "good" projects, like build schools, fix stuff, feed more dying people, etc. All of them will probably be overpaid as well.

That should last me about 10 to 20 years.

Keeping none for myself, because after I have helped millions of people, something is sure to come back.

I would deposit them into a Bitfinex margin account. Then I'd write a bot to use all available margin to alternate between long and short positions every 3 hours (plus or minus some random number of minutes).

Well, I think it will pay off.

I mean, think about it:

I donate to several presidential candidates, to help their campaigns.
I donate to several mayors, (17 cities in my jurisdiction, or area of responsibility.) for social projects.
I donate to several departments, national security, public works, highways, infrastructure, local police, local military.

Even if I never get a single fiat or bitcoin by giving it all away, I am sure I will be one of those few people in my area who won't have a problem with any permits, licensing, contracts, or any of the usual red tape, for everything from guns (legal), to bodyguards, to business permits, to construction, to traffic incidents ...

I mean, 1 million BTC = 387 Million United States Dollars = 17 Billion Philippine Peso.

1 Billion Peso per Mayor in my area? I'll have no problems for the rest of my life living here. (Oh, and that's over time, like 10~20 years, not lump sum. The OP did not specify a time frame.)
