Title: Newbies - Begin Here!
Post by: ValueAccounts on November 14, 2014, 11:38:00 PM
First off, welcome!

Here are a few tips to get you started:
1) Always read the stickies at the top of subforum categories, they contain important information about the subforum
2) If you participate in any kind of trade (in the marketplace most likely), use escrow!
3) Trust yourself and only yourself (conmen lurk everywhere and always do prior research before trusting someone)

Where to head?
1) Questions about the forum? Go here > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0
2) Participate in the central discussion board here > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.0
3) Marketplace, for all things trading (goods both digital and physical), buying, selling, auctioning and services > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=5.0
4) Basic help, you may be able to find specific help in more specific subforums such as services, mining or economics > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=39.0

Enjoy!

Feel free to add your own tips below and I will compile a greater list to help the newcomers!

Don't shitpost in off-topic or post rubbish with a signature or you'll very likely be banned. Lot's of people don't seem to realise that before it's too late. Have fun  :D.

Mprep created a thread of all the general rules. I suggest all newbies take a few mins to read it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0

Maybe you should include a link in the op as it'll be beneficial I think.

One bit of advice for new users, don't ask what the price will be. Although you will get pages of confident responses about how BTC will be $1 or $100k, no one in the universe knows the answer. Don't waste your time and delude yourself just because you found someone on the internet who shares your desire for a certain price.

Don't create topics about how the activity works if you don't want people bothered with your and mods looking your posts to find a pretext to ban you.

There are tons of topics about how activity works.

my question is; in wallet, (Threads (2)) what does that do, what if I change that number to 10 or even 20? I downloaded and read the pdf which is fine for setting up my wallet but it doesn't explain what my wallet is doing. But anyhow I have it running on Solo Mining for a couple of days now. When I try to run it on Pool Mining I get a miner failed to start. Make sure you have the minerd executable in the same directory as Phoenixcoin-Qt. So no pool mining for now.

Hey ValueAccounts! May I ask what is an escrow? I'm new to this forum and bitcoin and I want to buy some bitcoin in the market place.

Never download a wallet by a link in this forum which was posted by a random guy. Could contain a keylogger!

Be sure to download from the official coin developer's account (which should be "full member" or above). Use virustotal.com before unpacking the wallet files.

Hey ValueAccounts! May I ask what is an escrow? I'm new to this forum and bitcoin and I want to buy some bitcoin in the market place.

It's an independent and trusted third party (the "escrower") in a deal. For example, if you (the "buyer) want to buy some bitcoins by wiring USD to someone, the other party (the "seller") could betray you by not delivering the coins after the money was received. So you want the seller to first deliver the bitcoins to the escrower who will signal you that he has received them. Then you will wire the money, because the bitcoins are safely held by the escrower. Upon reception of the money, the seller will signal the escrower, who will release the bitcoins to you.

I can recommend this guy: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303281.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303281.0)

You're welcome!

You should use escrow in every trade. Even if you think you know the guy who you are trading with, his account could have been hacked! Escrow secures your money even in that case.

Always choose an escrow with higher green trust.

5+ is always good.

There is a nice list of escrows https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=686529.0, that you can check the escrow fees and their profile pages easily.

Download a wallet and starts with faucets (http://www.kwaasteniet.eu/faucet/). Faucets are websites which gives you small amounts of Bitcoins for looking to adds on that site. You don't have to do anything with the adds. Fill in your Bitcoin adress and do the captcha to prove that you are an human being and push the button "get reward" or similar. Don't think you become rich of the faucets. :)

It was the best escrow list, until Financisto became very busy and didn't have time to update it.
