I'm in for the long term, because I believe Bitcoin will become a major worldwide currency, and I rather start adopting it now that bitcoins are still cheap.

1 BTC is essentially one 21millionth of the future world economy (at least the part that deals with bitcoins, which I expect to become quite a significant portion). I feel just fine having a few thousand units of that in my pocket.

On my seller page in the SR Forums I am often asked how I don't know people will use the Bitcoins I sell them for cash to buy illegal goods.

Like with physical money Bitcoins can be used to buy or sell anything whatsoever though of course there's a preference for illegal goods due to the fact purchases are hard to trace.

Having said that on the official Bitcoin website there are lists of over 50 legitimate businesses which sell legal products - anything from web design, to T-Shirts to gold ingots.

Personally I only buy Bitcoins to sell them again but I have also used them to buy and read some excellent e-books on various topics.

I'm in it because I like the idea of an online currency with features like the possibility of anonymity and the decentralisation aspect.  I really hope it does well in the future, so far so good.

its incredibly easy to understand and to use, for a computer geek like me. it's open source, it has a RPC, its easy modifiable.
and i own bitcoins i have, and its up to me to protect them, and how to do so.
bank are just technically shit compared to bitcoin.

I initially intented to hoard some coins for the future...but then I discovered GLBSE, and the dormant gambler in me suddenly awoke...the potential returns are huge...but I guess so are the risks!  :)
Anyway, I guess my coins are doing more good for the growth of Bitcoin as investment in Bitcoin enterprises than sitting idle on my off-line wallet.

I'm in it because i Think it's probably the most fair monetary sytem in existance (though there are better ones thinkable). I own what i have, no government manipulations possible (i.e. steal my savings by inflation...)

Though I made some bad expieriences according security breaches of mt. gox or the latest issue with bitcoinica I'm trusting in the concept of bitcoin and hope many businesses will come to existence wich are serious and trustworthy.

I invested some coins in mining-bonds at glbse wich returns a nice revenue each week.

a part af my coins are stored offline in paper-wallet an I'll try to purchase further ammonts of bitcoins by buying them on exchanges.

I hope that in a not so far future bitcoin will find it's way in everyday businesses....

the most exiting question at this moment for me is: how will the btc-economy react when mining revenues will go down to 50 % the first time (probablyin less than 7 months...)

i haven't been able to use any yet as the nearest bank to buy any is 49 miles from me :( i been reading here a lot and trying to find alternatives to getting them, free coin sites and mining but i haven't been able to get my miner working. i don't really need to buy anything, i just like that they have value and i can keep working at getting a ton of them. :)

I use them because I believe they will be more stable than fiat in the coming years. All one has to do is look at financial situations in the U.S. an E.U. and wonder who is next.

The currency is just plain awesomeness.
Though I understand there's quite a few scammers and stealers. If only the coins had some sort of chargeback feature.

Title: Re: Why do you use Bitcoins?
Post by: teknomunk on June 10, 2012, 01:14:13 AM
I like bitcoin because of the lack of a feature like chargeback, the inability of any party to change the rules without pretty much everybody accepting them, and the set inflation rate and cap.

I do not really use them (I have only tested them), but this is the main reason to support it.

Actually I think that for a future system the currency question is no longer relevant. With fast, and almost commission-free electronic exchange systems, it doesn't matte what is used as the currency - you can exchange immediately your personal "currency" (which would be reasonably based on obligations to give you real values) into whatever is used for exchange.

But if it is bitcoins, that would be fine.

Title: Re: Why do you use Bitcoins?

Freedom of Government and Banks telling me how to spend my money and when I need to pay either entity when I haven't made any previous arrangements to pay compensation for something or they with held information that I wasn't aware of initially then had to pay the consequences I was unaware of.
When Bitcoins are accepted everywhere I will not have to worry about exchange rates when I travel to different countries that are widely accepting Bitcoins, so there's that whole convenience factor involved.

That's why I use Bitcoins.

I use Bitcoin because I believe it represents the best features amongst currencies.

Specifically:
- Nobody can change the rules on the fly, freeze your assets because they don't agree with your actions or levy excessive charges on you for spending your own money.
- Anonymity allows businesses which are illegal for ideological reasons to flourish, specifically gambling-related organisations and the drugs trade (although I'm not involved in the latter).
- It's just damned convenient.

I use bitcoins due to it's deflationary aspect and well thought out system of currency.  It is unlike any others and to jump into something different is quite fascinating.

Mining is another thing.  Due to its decentralization aspect I can also print my own money in this currency.  That's another factor to put in.  The people can shape the currency without any government intervention.  In this way, people have freedom to what they want with this currency.

Pragmatism:

     1.  Efficiency.  Transactions that wouldn't have been worthwhile, now are.
     2.  Versatility.  I can afford to transfer funds in ways that would have been nearly impossible with previous methods.

Intellectual Curiosity

Ideology

Nothing right now, just savings them up, and buying some to bide my time. My personal opinion is that physical currency can't survive in a digital age, and BC's have survived long enough to possibly survive for the next decade.

1. No fees or regulations by a 3rd party
2. Interesting options for the latent trader wanna-be in me
3. If it catches on, I would be highly supportive of this.
4. It's geeky

I just wish that I could use all of my IRL time to chase this and read everything and play in all the fields. But real life calls, and is what is currently funding my BTC interest.

I'm particularly interested in the alternative value structure of the bitcoin universe.  Though I'm fully aware that the USD or other internationally used (and state supported) currency took its initial value as being inherently related to some non-material value of gold, it seems that the precious metals model still exists in the layman thinking of where the value on money comes from.  Bitcoin presents what appears to be an entirely different value source, from computer labor, which allows for an interesting competitive twist, especially as the capital costs to gain entry to the "mine" are relatively low.

Aside from the theoretical interest, a non-authoritative and seemingly fraud proof currency that has the potential for near total anonymity could facilitate larger world processes than just circulation of a new currency is something that I'm not just going to brush aside without a first-hand look at the inside.
