Title: Mixed Reward Scheme?
Post by: martychubbs on June 07, 2012, 03:26:44 PM
Thinking about setting up a pool with a mixed reward pool with rewards being split via prop/DGM or prop/PPLNS.  So like 25 btc rewarded to each algorithm.

Has this been done before?  Thought i read about it, but didn't see it in a search...

Don't know if that would work, say there is one miner on Prop and five miners on PPLNS.

Now say all the miners on PPLNS have 10GH, so they find a block and they all get 5BTC (25/5).
The single prop miner has 1GH, but he is the only miner on prop, so he gets all 25BTC.

See the problem?

You can do a convex combination of different reward systems. But preferably each of the component systems should be good - if half of the reward is proportional, the pool will be almost as hoppable as a prop pool.

A PPS/PPLNS hybrid can work. It would be similar in some ways to DGM, which one is better is a matter of taste.

I touched this briefly in section "Hybrid reward methods" (currently 7.3) of AoBPMRS.

Individual miners won't be classified as prop or PPLNS. All shares will enter the same database; when a block is found, the reward corresponding to prop for this data will be calculated, as will the reward corresponding to PPLNS. Every miner will get half of each.

We have found DGM and PPS pretty easy to run side by side
but it think you need to split by hashrate not block reward :)

Thanks for clearing that up, I understand now.

That's different, what (I think) you are doing is running a PPS pool which is really a proxy to your DGM pool.

But it's probably true that a PPS/DGM hybrid is equivalent to splitting hashrate between a DGM pool and a PPS pool which is a proxy to the same pool.

There are all sorts of things you can do, I'd say chapter 7 is worth a read.

Thanks for the insight, detailed and thoughtful!  Both MR & G

PPS proxy to a DGM pool is probably the best bet

+1 on chapter 7
