Title: Toasters to Mine Bitcoins
Post by: bornil267645 on November 19, 2014, 02:41:58 PM
Is it possible to mine Bitcoin using refrigerators and toasters.

How that even works?

Well they are saying that hackers could target this things to compute with the mining power of computed device.

Is it possible?

The list of requirements is pretty short:
  • Must be capable of performing the calculations required; even lowly microcontrollers may be sufficient
  • Must be capable of being programmed to perform these calculations; if you can't change the firmware/software, you're stuck
  • Must be connected to the internet; otherwise you'd have to manually set it up with work, and manually submit solved work
  • Must be hackable across the internet via a vulnerability; only in the case of remote hacking, though that's generally the vector to go for.. being able to hack a machine in person is great, but that's a lot of work for very little trade-off.
If your toaster, fridge, coffee machine, whatever was made by some company that jumped on the IoT bandwagon, there's a good chance they could do it.

Whether that's worth the bother depends on how many machines you manage to actually target.  Processing power in these is pretty limited, but if you can get 10,000,000 of them, at very low cost to you, then it may be lucrative all the same.

Remember that some NAS (basically just a 'dumb' hard disk on your network) systems were hacked to perform cryptocoin (in this case, Dogecoin) mining; http://www.pcworld.com/article/2364120/hacked-synology-nas-systems-used-in-highprofit-cryptocurrency-mining-operation.html

It would be have to be alt coins, probably a cpu coin.
Well it wouldn't have to be.  It's just likely that it's easier and more profitable to mine such a coin, and then exchange that for other coins (including Bitcoin), than mining Bitcoin; same reason those NAS boxes were mining Dogecoin, rather than Bitcoin or even Litecoin (at the time, Dogecoin was going through a growth spurt).

Op are you really interested in mining cryptocurrencies with Toeaster or Freezer? It seems illogical and really waste of potential even if you could make it work. You will be better with one ASIC than dozens of Toasters.

My toaster, refrigerator, as long as the links to the things other people could be controlled? For them to seek benefits, but spend my electricity bill?

Of course. You have it smack on.

They'll just steal your power, and risk ruining your machines.

Neither refrigerators nor toasters belong into the internet.

Have never been there, worked just fine. Stop the bullshit.

The day I start mining with my toaster or refrigerator will be the day my GF throws me off the balcony!  :o

Lol toaster farm....

GPU farms are already toasters in a matter of speaking

You would need around one million toasters or fridges to equal one modern ASIC miner.

A typical modern Intel CPU will do 3 to 30 MHashes/second (Core I5 or I7).  A modern ASIC miner does 3 Terrahash/s or 3,000,000 MHashes/second.

So you would need somewhere between 100,000 and 1,000,000 toasters or fridges to equal one modern bitcoin ASIC miner.  And even more if the toaster has a low performance CPU.

Maybe we can just put the miners modules into the fridges and remove the fans tie the power into the fridges power supply, and WALA Instant asic cooling device and miner all in one. Would that save on electricity HAHA.

Still not sure how we can implement a toaster into mining.

Don't see it work for toasters and freezers, but it could be possible for an electric air heaters. Instead of classic heating mechanism, you could use optimised/integrated ASICs to provide the heat. The only question is power consumption, if it's significantly higher than for classic heater, then it's pointless.

It's not actually or practically possible to mine bitcoins from your toaster or refrigerator.
That article says it as a part comedy.
These kind of attacks are already there in networked servers and computers.
That's something like distributed computer.
But at the present time your toaster and refrigerator are safe.
Not for alt coins that use CPU only or an ARM coin if one comes out.
Would like to see an ARM-only coin come out.

I don't think they would be able to mine bitcoins at all. even if they are hacked someway to mine,
then they will only be worth using for altcoins.

Does your toaster have internet connection? If it does not then donīt worry :)

Joke of the month? How can people mine with toaster?

Don't forget that 20 years ago, you would have said the same thing about phones.

With certain manufacturers pushing for the Internet-of-Things, and with toasters with microprocessors already in existence, the stage is quickly being set where it is at least technically possible.  It would make about as much sense to do as trying to mine on smartphones today, but possible.

Now I can mine and cook at the same time... with my mom toaster! :)

PS: IF it's really possible.

I'd buy a toaster miner. Toast waffles while alt mining? That's a good breakfast.

Anyone else remember the NetBSD toaster? If that's possible, then why not a toaster miner?
