Title: Veritas Escrow Service / MultiSig m-of-n tx support [BTC/LTC/PPC/NVC/42]
Post by: Serge V. on November 19, 2014, 07:55:42 PM
     Greetings Community!
I would like to offer You the most reliable escrow (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escrow) service based on bitcoin protocol – multi-signature transactions (http://www.bitcoininplainenglish.com/wordpress/?p=137). Was found that existing such services are still complicated for most people, so I decide to help You with each step and use only standard wallet. You can choose 3-of-3 / 2-of-3 scheme with one escrow agent, or even 2-of-2 - without (!) any agents, actually, almost any (15 max) m-of-n, where m - is a number of required signatures (private keys) for releasing the funds and n - is a total number of involved people (public keys).

Main Features:
  • No need to trust each other or any sites. Stop worrying about agent trust score! You can easy verify the correctness of MultiSig address (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10174049#msg10174049) and final transaction (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10184842#msg10184842).
  • Built-in protection from fraud, hacking and thermo-rectal cryptanalysis physical compromising. Nobody have access to the funds, including the escrow agent. Coins can be released from MultiSig address (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Address#Multi-signature_addresses) only when the buyer, the seller and the escrow agent checked and signed the correct transaction (voted).
  • Protection from losing if one of the parties will disappear. When choosing 2-of-3 escrow scheme, two parties will be capable to release the funds without third party (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10137813#msg10137813).
  • Protection from disappearing of the agent. In case if something happen with me, you will be able to contact with the 2nd escrow agent (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=199361) to finalize the transaction (he will keep a copy of my key).
  • Instant releasing of funds from the escrow. Are You still waiting for the escrow agent to come on-line and release Your funds? Choose 2-of-2 or 2-of-3 escrow scheme and do it without him (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10137813#msg10137813)!
  • Reliable purchase/sell (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10150985#msg10150985) (also applicable for accounts) and loan with collateral (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10118689#msg10118689) escrow schemes.
  • Encrypted communication. For easy and instant communication, we will use skype-alternative secure p2p messenger Tox (https://tox.chat) (1). End-to-end encrypted messaging with ProtonMail (veritas.escrow@protonmail.com) (2). PGP key (https://keybase.io/serge_v/key.asc) (3).
  • Does not require any special knowledge. I will support You until escrow completed.
  • No need to download the full transaction history and keep the wallet synchronized. You will need the full version of a client for creating MultiSig address and for signing the final transaction. For this purpose, You can use even offline wallet!
  • BTC, LTC, PPC, NVC & 42 support. Depend of Your requests I will add more coins in the future.

Below You will find in signed message my and 2nd agent Tox IDs and my pubkey. To verify this important data, open Your wallet application and go to File -> Verify message.

So you mean, both escrow agents are yourself and you'd essentially have complete control of the 2-of-3 transaction?

I am not associated with the 2nd agent in any way, we live very far from each other. He will need only if something happen with me or dispute situation. If You don't want to trust him, You can propose Your 2nd agent or choose another escrow scheme (3-of-3 or 2-of-3, etc.).

P.S. Also he will replace me when I'm offline (I can't be online 24/7), in this case I will play the role of the 2nd agent.

Nobody can't have complete control of 2-of-3 transaction, 2-of-3 means that for releasing the funds from MultiSig address is required 2 of 3 signatures - one from the escrow agent and the other from the buyer or the seller. Complete control of the transaction always has usual escrow agent.

if you "know" where "he" lives then you are somehow associated with him. What would stop you from colluding with one party and releasing the funds to that party inappropriately?

I can propose You 3-of-3 (with one escrow agent) or 3-of-4 (with your 2nd agent) escrow scheme - this will protect "from colluding with one party and releasing the funds" in 100%.

No use in multisig if 2 of the 3 parties (the escrows) are not trusted.

Dear users, in the role of the 2nd escrow agent can be anybody you trust, he will need for additional safety of Your funds, for releasing the coins (I will instruct how) in case if something happen with the 1st agent and when You can't contact with him (or dispute situation). If You don't need additional level of security, choose 2-of-3 scheme (with one escrow).

Anyway, one trusted usual escrow agent is not better than 2 untrusted MultiSig escrow agents.

Only 3 commands in bitcoin/litecoin-qt console for the end user. This will give absolute security for paranoid clients with round sum. For small tx or for those people who trust me, I can propose usual escrow service.

Actually, with MultiSig, some kind of escrow possible and without third party (I can help to prepare transaction).

Let me quote Satoshi about 2-of-2 escrow transactions:

The basic escrow: The buyer commits a payment to escrow. The seller receives a transaction with the money in escrow, but he can't spend it until the buyer unlocks it... If the seller doesn't send the goods, he doesn't get paid. The buyer would still be out the money, but at least the seller has no monetary motivation to stiff him.

The buyer can't benefit by failing to pay. He can't get the escrow money back. He can't fail to pay due to lack of funds. The seller can see that the funds are committed to his key and can't be sent to anyone else...

Exactly. Using a standard well trusted escrow agent is much easier. Even if it is multisig I think you should have more trust here before starting this service.

How do You think, can newbie perform MultiSig escrow (or show me who provide such service)? I started this thread with aim to show the people that with MultiSig transactions they don't need to trust anybody, bitcoin protocol gives more higher level of security than can provide any trusted escrow.

Quote
Multi-signature addresses are like joint bank accounts, and are partially owned by each person who put forward a key to create it. When creating a multi-signature address, you need to specify how many of the owners need to sign to release the funds.

The Case for Multisig
You could set up an account between you and your wife that both of you can spend from, by creating a 1 of 2 address. This means: of the two keys used to create this address, a signature from only one party is required. Any money that was sent to this address could be spent by either party.

If you wanted to create a joint account, but wanted to approve transactions before the other person can spent money, you can create a 2 of 2 address. Of the two keys used to create the address, a signature from both is required. Both people who partially own the address can create unsigned transactions, and sign them with their own key, but without a signature from the second party, the transaction cannot go through. This could be the savings account you have with your wife, or maybe your wallet on another website. If one of you gets hacked, you still need the other to approve payments.

You can generate addresses with up to twenty possible signatories. So you could have a 5 of 10 address, where 5 people of the 10 need to agree on where the funds are going. This is pretty arbitrary until you find a purpose for your address.

One of the interesting cases is a 2-of-3 signature address, which allows for funds to be safely locked in escrow. If two people wish to perform a transaction (like purchase of goods, or services), but both parties fear that the other might not be trust-worthy, they can elect a trusted 3rd party as a signatory. If either party reneges on the agreement, the third party can create a transaction paying the money to the deserving party.

About MultiSig and how it works. (http://thomas.bitwasp.co/?p=34)

yeah but I don't get why anyone would want to use you for escrow when there are already so many more reputable escrow providers who have done many transactions.

the question is why would anyone take this risk, even if minimal to none, when there are already much less risky options?

Escrow completed, funds successfully released (https://coinplorer.com/LTC/Transactions/20c47ac7800a95e0fbbbf46b28ad629bbc8d6b366e5c5f709656d6edacab0a48). Thanks for using our service, hope You assessed the security of MultiSig transactions and will recommend us for others.

Yes, I do apologize and I understand now. It seems like this could be a good service and more escrows should adopt this method over the traditional way of having a neutral third party hold on to the goods/currency.

Reliable Loan with collateral escrow scheme successfully tested on DOGE:

1. Alice want to loan 80 coins from Bob and will provide own acc. for collateral.
2. Escrow agent creates 2-of-2 MultiSig address from Alice and Bob public keys (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Addresses/ADjPfqFpYKiocyFMvXxkeUSpz8vYT96Fc7).
3. Bob sends 160 coins to the MultiSig address (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Transactions/cb6a60f734e47b4354d36ee674f6c22f798981a270a8c80ac49965b3860ae9f5).
4. Alice transfers her acc. to Bob after tx completion.
5. Escrow agent prepares 80 coins tx from MultiSig address to Alice.
6. Alice and Bob check and sign it,  80 coins goes to Alice, while others return to the Multisig address (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Transactions/4743ea6a36f5b2a65c12928804deb218b1f15583a145b817fce826d169261ec0).

Bob is responsible for security of Alice acc., in case of failure he can lose 80+80 coins.
Alice is interested to return 80 coins, otherwise she can lose her acc.
Escrow agent is interested to be everything smoothly because he can lose his 1% fee and reputation (funds can be returned back via private keys input).

7. Alice returns the loan back to the MultiSig address (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Transactions/5c1a062aabd262538e3eb1aac3637f1c229525bf4f217ed5dbb553df13cfb9e6).
8. After tx completion Bob returns acc. back to Alice.
9. Escrow agent prepares 160 coins tx back to Bob (-1% fee).
10. Alice and Bob check and sign it, 160 coins goes back to Bob (-1% to Escrow agent) (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Transactions/8b2eff599976770d11873a6f292808d92d5f05af3f8689da7a484abcbf7cfa44).

Choose 2-of-3 MultiSig escrow scheme if You want to add opportunity of arbitration. It will also protect you from losing, if one of the parties will disappear.

Are You still waiting for the escrow agent to come on-line and release Your funds? Choose 2-of-2 or 2-of-3 escrow scheme and do it without him!

1. Before the escrow the buyer/seller creates new address.
2. From the public keys of those addresses created MultiSig address.
3. The buyer sends founds to the MultiSig address.
4. The seller sends goods to the buyer.
Import of private key - is the simplest way to get the funds from the MultiSig address:
5. The buyer receives the goods and sends his private key to the seller (from the toolbar selects: Help>Debug window>Console>types "getprivkey 1xxxBuyerNewAddress">press "Enter").
6. The seller imports the private key (from the toolbar selects: Help>Debug window>Console>types "importrivkey 1xxxBuyerNewAddress">press "Enter") and owns the funds from the MultiSig address.

[Edited]. Reliable purchase/sell (also applicable for accounts) escrow scheme that motivates scammer to be honest to his trading partner (see discussion (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=855778.msg14143840#msg14143840)):

1. Before the escrow the buyer must have on the separate address of his wallet twice more coins than the goods costs (2x) and the seller must have on the separate address of his wallet as many coins as the goods worth (1x).
2. The escrow agent creates a transaction, according to which the buyer collateral & the buyer payment for goods (2x) + the seller collateral (1x) will be sent to the created from their public keys MultiSig address.
3. The buyer and the seller checks and sign the transaction, the transaction is broadcasted to the network.
4. After the transaction is confirmed, the seller sends the goods to the buyer.
5. The buyer receives the goods and informs the escrow agent.
6. The escrow agent creates the transaction, according to which the seller will receive the seller collateral & the buyer payment for goods (2x) and the buyer will receive the buyer collateral (1x).
7. The seller and the buyer checks and sign the transaction, the transaction is broadcasted to the network.

Seller is interested to send the goods to buyer because he can lose an amount equal to value of the goods.
Buyer is interested to release the funds after getting the goods, otherwise he can lose an amount equal to value of the goods.
Collateral will encourage both sides to be honest, and if something happens with the parcel to conduct a thorough investigation and find consensus.

Q. How to verify the correctness of created MultiSig address?
A. Before adding MultiSig address to Your wallet, make sure the command "addmultisigaddress" contains only public keys involved in escrow parties.

Example (2-of-3 MultiSig escrow):
Code:
addmultisigaddress 2 '["02853707a7647c838ab29266ac3e72217754ccf38e38d9bff0f2fed3fb34adac57","03db795d90000ac169baaa2d8f0b488eb71568d7ad84a74c40aa031a504170b6af","028a0f65d63c159b5c003dd33c91e78d0b592ef98d2eb7adb25d51c69f95c9b129"]'

a) 02853707a7647c838ab29266ac3e72217754ccf38e38d9bff0f2fed3fb34adac57 - Buyer public key
b) 03db795d90000ac169baaa2d8f0b488eb71568d7ad84a74c40aa031a504170b6af - Seller public key

multisig escrow does make sense however that is not what you are actually offering. You are offering escrow services using a multisig address (2 of 3) however you will control 2 of the 3 keys therefore you alone can spend the funds.

There is no reason to think that you would not run away once you receive funds from one of your actual customers.

Nope, we can control 2 of 4(!) keys only in one scheme that offered (3-of-4 escrow), read the thread! It is impossible to control 2 of the 3 keys in 2-of-3 escrow, because two keys belong to buyer/seller and only one key left for escrow... this already discussed (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg9612242#msg9612242).

Anyway, if Skyripper doesn't like to trust me, I would like to offer for him 2-of-2 advanced escrow scheme (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10150985#msg10150985), MultiSig address will contain only buyer and seller pubkeys (without my pubkey!).

yes, this is similar to buying trust ratings basically..

u should not do this as it is frowned upon in this community to openly "buy" trust

No, this will only stimulate parties to leave feedback (positive or not). This is more fair and more difficult for escrow agent than earning trust when making regular trading... And of course, I will make chargeback only to the address involved in escrow or person must be able to sign a message with it.

Stimulate lol. With that logic bribes are only used to stimulate or encourage a party too. Whether you want to admit it or not this is clearly trust farming and offering encouragement to leave feedback in exchange for discounts. A person of your rank shouldn't be offering escrow services either regardless if its multisig or not.

Reliable purchase/sell (also applicable for accounts) escrow scheme in which seller and buyer can't have any motivation to cheat each other (tested on DOGE):

1. Escrow agent creates 2-of-2 MultiSig address from Buyer and Seller pubkeys (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Addresses/AAUXv9TyNYoeSyzXKz9Yzxw19EB2V7Gz45).
2. Buyer sends 2x coins to MultiSig address (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Transactions/93c7d8a9d2d8685de33962c258d5809d213b6a0fc00dd19b310e07ed2ee00f9a) (buyer collateral + buyer payment for goods).
3. Seller sends 1x coins to MultiSig address (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Transactions/3ce36d1ac23b751bcb0c166122bd040240983586bbe5f61a0554daa20c5eb131) (seller collateral).
4. Seller sends goods to buyer.
5. Buyer receives the goods and informs the escrow agent.
6. Escrow agent prepares 1x coins tx from MultiSig address to buyer (buyer collateral) and 2x coins to seller (seller collateral + buyer payment for goods).
7. Buyer and seller checks and signs tx, 1x coins goes back to buyer and 2x coins goes to seller (https://coinplorer.com/DOGE/Transactions/fab1cdb9fe6edd92f40fbf868cdb8a55110872c3db2afc5c5a99e9f09b270d64).

My first question to this would be why we need an escrow agent at all in this scheme. He has no power and doesn't do anything that the buyer or seller couldn't do.

My second question is what happens if the seller is a scammer, and doesn't send any coins in step 3? The buyer has just lost 2x his coins and has no chance of getting them back if the scammer doesn't cooperate. The scammer can make a transaction paying 1.9x coins to himself and 0.1x coins to the buyer. The buyer has to choose between signing the transaction and getting 0.1x coins back or not signing it and getting 0 coins back.

Thank you for your reply, your opinion is appreciated.

You doesn't, if you are capable to perform such transaction (this will be great).

This scheme was modified (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1215033.msg12737166#msg12737166), but I have not edited this post (done (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=865167.msg10150985#msg10150985)). Actually, step 2 and 3 was combined in one, so the buyer and seller funds are sent to the MultiSig address at the same time and in the same transaction (https://coinplorer.com/PPC/Transactions/74aeaf11e040542ded67fe44a487c81b368c41bd345e547e7001f716a9af7248).

OK, so that gives you a way of 2 people safely transacting without the need of any escrow. Very nice.

There's still a slight issue:

The buyer locks up twice as much as the seller. If I pose as a seller when I have no intention of selling, I can get you to lock up 2 BTC of your funds while only locking up 1 BTC of mine. As soon as you lock up your 2 BTC I tell you I'm a scammer, and that I need a 50/50 split to release the coins. You have to choose between getting back 1.5 BTC or nothing. Which would you choose?

Maybe some people would sacrifice the 1.5 BTC just so the scammer takes a loss. But I expect most people would agree to the 50/50 split because it's in their own best interest.

Before a purchase people look for the best seller with a good trading history. So the seller is risked not only 1 BTC, but also his reputation which worth more than a single purchase. Also, he can't know exactly what kind of buyer he will get, because when people are going to buy something they usually not spend the last money, and I'm sure, most of them, when got a chance, will prefer to punish the scammer and leave him without reputation and money.
