Title: PCI-Express Speed and mining
Post by: elfranne on June 10, 2012, 11:27:55 PM
I am wondering what is the influence of the speed of the PCI-E on the mining speed ?
For example if i get the mb :  GA-990FXA-UD5 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128509) it has 5 PCI-E slot : x16, x16, x8, x4, x4.  So would i get lower hashrates because of limited bandwidth on the 8x and 4x PCI-E slots ?

Slot speed has no influence on the hash rate for example I have a 6870 on 1x slot with an adapter cable it does the same speed as when it was in a 16x slot.

I would be very dubious about buying the GA-990FXA-UD5 motherboard. I currently have two of these boards and cannot make the boards run more than 3 x 5850  cards. This is using Xubuntu 11.04 64b, 11.6 drivers, SDK 2.4 and CGMiner 2.3.2 - 4.2
You may have more success with other OS and Miners but at the moment and as there seems to be no solutions offered from this Forum I would say beware of the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 if you intend to do the above

Also these boards have a documented history of problems booting from a USB stick.
