But Seriously, I was on Battlefield 4 and mentioned the new processor I was getting and as expected there was at least one that bitched about how it wouldn't make much of a difference, then I mentioned the fact I had been playing with a dual core processor for about five years and there was an "Oh" and immediate silence.

No wonder games aren't optomised anymore, some people are just so used to quad cores and more they don't fucking see the point!

fyi, these will be my new specs as of Monday, I actually can't wait and I'm curled up in a ball right now having withdrawal because I'll be able to play Star Citizen at max settings if I get everything installed.

To put this in perspective for the foetuses who won't understand why this will be such a life changer for me, currently a game of Battlefield 4 can take up to 5 minutes to load, according to some benchmark videos I looked at the shiny new 8 core processor I'm getting will make it so that the loading time is only up to 26 seconds, adding to that, I will no longer need to turn off my wallets to save processing power for my gaming or loading up anything else that takes awhile because of course I will have have an extra spare 4 processors chugging away in the background instead. So I'm actually going to be more productive now in my work because I'm not sitting around forever waiting for anything to fucking load! Also my games won't crash as easily so that will mean a lot less stress in general, unless of course the coding is still crap, but then I can officially blame the game at that point.

I think the best improvement over your old system (other than the RAM and processor) would be the hard drive.  An SSD can do wonders with old games, esp ones that have thousands of bitmaps to load, like Call of Duty.

Did you get an SSD on this new computer?

SSD's are just too expensive for me to justify right now, I know everybody keeps annoyingly swearing by them but honestly, as I said, you guys have no idea how slow my processor is, that's going to be the biggest improvement and as far as I'm concerned the only necessary improvement, the extra RAM will help plenty too. Spending such an amount of money on an SSD drive that isn't even that large just to shave a few seconds off the loading times doesn't sit right with me as you've seen me demonstrate It takes 5 minutes to load Battlefield currently so I'm more than happy with the idea of being able to load it in less than 30 seconds.

Going by the youtube benchmarks other games should load even faster, so yeah, I'm not bothered about SSD, talk to me in a year or two when 1TB SSD's are the same price as HDDs and I'll have probably bought one.

Nonsense.  Buy a small 120GB 256GB SSD for $100.  Install your OS on the SSD, and install all your programs on your regular slow hard drive.

Trust me - I felt the same as you until I purchased one.  They are so fast you'll probably save 50% off your loading time just by having the OS on a ram drive.  No joke friend.

My main computer has a 120GB SSD as the boot drive, a 1TB drive as my program drive and a Drobo as my data storage.  Very fast.

I'll stick with my HDD until I get a nice regular income I think they work just fine :P

I personally like SSDs myself, though I agree that the difference in cost per GB between SSD and HDD is still pretty stark. The Crucial MX100 line is on the more budget-conscious end though, if you ever plan on trying one out to gauge the performance difference.

Congratulations on the upgrade, anyways! The 8350 is a nice CPU for gaming and heavily threaded applications, and it still puts up a good fight against its pricier alternatives. I only built my first computer the previous summer, so I don't have a lot of spare cash to upgrade it for now. Though the Black Friday sales are a bit tempting...

If I pissed away that much money on a hard drive my parents would be pretty annoyed, I can spend money on certain things, but I have to justify it, right now I don't have enough of an income to just buy that shit, that's why I said you guys are spoiled because you can shell out several hundred dollars on two new graphics cards whenever you want :P

Most of my money right now is going to a new computer for work and gaming and casting equipment so I can mass produce Jewellery ;) Then, THEN I might get an SSD drive if things go well and I earn money for myself. Also, if I had had several million, I wouldn't be anywhere near as active on this forum as I am now.

i know the feeling but most of the time im one of the ones with the ultimate PC (advantage to being me) im unemployed but PCs are my main pleasure in life currently iv taken a step back from PCs but will be building a new high spec one in February or there about.

like i said if you in the UK next time i get a few SSD's on buy one get one free ill send you one (might even be worth shipping overseas)

lol I am in the UK but don't bother, if I want one I'll get it myself :D I'm taking steps so I at least get money on a regular basis and don't have to worry >_< :P plus the stock market crash is coming up again of course so lots of money to be made off that mwhahahahhaaaa.

still well worth them when you can afford one. O.S on the ssd and games on a HDD and even with a low end PC youll see a big difference in everything you do

Back in my day i played on my snes..... street fight 2 turbo, supermarioworld stuff like that.  Have to say i havent actually taken the chance to ever play the games of today, they look amazing and the 1st person shooters where you connect with people around the world seem cool just dont know if i want to get into all that as it means extra computer time.

The open world stuff looks fantastic, while I was able to play a couple of them some of them are getting so massive now my computer can't even run them, so that's part of my reasoning for wanting to get something that was overkill and reasonable, hopefully HOPEFULLY I'll get my gear on Monday, install it and then play Battlefield 4 for a bit without any stuttering or freezing :D maybe a bit of Farcry 4 too.

cant run either of them on my eco PC XD stuck with either borderlands 2/per-sequal or World Of Tanks.. need to break out the gaming PC again soon and stop using my eco friendly PC

omfg I feel for you, I can only run Battlefield 3 and games like CSS properly right now, don't ever bother with eco components, they're shit, they're basically just regular components that have been made less efficient through software and stuff to make them consume less electricity, yeah get a gaming PC, you won't regret it, I know I'll be fapping to all the games that I haven't had a chance to properly play yet on Monday because of my processor.

iv got a gaming PC but my eco PC uses a whole 40w under max load XD gaming PC uses 10 times that.. it does great for movies and low end games and web browsing add them all together its about 80% of my PC time. that why im using it most of the time. plus saves a ton of money on electric :D

You do realise I'm learning how to cast silver and set gemstones right? Also making some drastic improvements on my artwork which I will be posting up when I'm happy with them and then I've also got a 2D platformer that's nearly ready for some alpha testing that I want to put out thanks to the blender game engine :P

Part of the reason I post so much and game a lot is because I have to actually sit down and think about my work a lot before I can do any of it >_< left brain thinkers wouldn't understand that :P so unless you have a working knowledge of anatomy and understand how vertex groups work get off my case!

Just curious. Why is it a scam, and do you honestly consider yourself better off not pursuing any sort of education?

I used to have a Pentium 166MMX, and buy a new computer every 2 years. Back then everything was developing so fast that you couldn't play new games on an older system and the components were much more expensive. Now you can have the same computer for 5 years and still be able to play, so I don't think they are spoiled now.

Shots fired, haha. I'm debating between a Lenovo Y50 and the Z710 for gaming. Would the 5400 RPM/8GB Memory still be sufficient for a game like Heroes of Newerth? (if anyone knows that game)

I'm taking private tuition, not only is it cheaper but I'm also getting a much better education out of it, how the hell else do you think I learned to set gemstones? Youtube tutorials? lol :P Basically as I learned from one horrid experience after another teachers make all sorts of wild claims about what you can achieve and what kind of jobs you can get within education and then of course you discover once you're done all the things they taught you were completely useless in the real world unless it was some kind of very specialised degree you were taking, doctor or lawyer would work obviously, but that takes grades most people don't have.

If that isn't enough evidence to stack up on my side of the argument, a lot of my friends are coming back home now and don't know what to do with themselves because everything I've predicted has come true, the university loan system is also ready to collapse in my country, so yes, considering I'm learning how to produce stuff and sell it, I am better off, hell, even if I don't get going very much I suppose I could always get a job doing welding or start building stuff from that open source ecology website with what I've learned if worse comes to worse :P I'd just have to get used to the idea of measuring in centimetres and metres rather than millimetres.

In short though, the best decision I ever made was deliberately going out of my way to find teachers who wouldn't bullshit me and so far, it's paying off a lot, you aren't going to find them in schools and universities that rely on their students being ignorant.

Yeah, it's actually true that and I was only messing around with the spoiled thing :D I remember roughly how much we paid for my computer 5 years ago and it's worked out about the same here too so I've gotten a hell of a lot out of it, point is, don't be stupid and immediately just buy the next new graphics card assuming it will make a massive difference, because it won't.

yeah, a SSD made my life much better  :D

my first own PC was a Pentium with 266 Mhz - damn fast  :o

my rule on GPUs is buy them New for around £100-150 never spent more than that and never needed to. the reason to buy new is alot of clowns out there destroy there cards with overheating and poor cooling, so what seems a good deal turns into a lemon

as for education here in the UK it sucks. hell i failed English (please note the UK speaks ENGLISH) how that possible im not sure but it happened, im pretty much self taught in everything i do from mechanics to computers, i also refuse to bay £4000 for a university course on something simple. the government can go and shove it, the only reason id do a uni course is get a fat ass loan and never pay it back (only have to pay it back if you earn £30k+ a year which i dont intend to do) and if i did earn that much i sure as hell wouldn't tell the government :D (fix the holes in my god damn street then we will talk about you getting my money)

when i came to that i didnt buy new XD just got them cheap off ebay hoped they where decent and mined until they failed. buying them new was to expensive licky for me non of my cards failed and even better was i was one of the first to get ASIC's it was on 2x5ghs from BFL but got them early

Back in the day I felt blessed to own a pentium 100mhz that could play Doom in at it's full glory, I felt spoiled compared to my neighbours with their 386 computers. The good old days. These days I feel overwhelmed with too much computing power and dull games.

My family room computer has a core2duo in it, e8400, and a SSD was by far the best upgrade I ever made. I'll upgrade the processor/motherboard when I have leftovers from something else.  

You don't need a 1 TB SSD, Samsung Evo 840 250 GB is on sale for $99 on Amazon, and use your existing platter drive as a secondary data drive. Before I got one a couple years ago, I made all the excuses about not wanting to spend the money on a SSD too, but once I got one, I realized how dumb it was to not get one earlier. It doesn't "just" shave 5 seconds off loading time, it makes everything faster and pretty much instantaneous for everything. If you spend any amount of time on your computer, especially for work, you are handicapping yourself. You'll understand and kick yourself one day when you finally get one. My HTPC/gaming computer has a new i5, and my file server has an i7, so it isn't like I don't know what an upgrade from the e8400 would be like either.

Well if and when I can afford it I may get an SSD to try it out, but that's when :P Right now though I'll be happy getting my computer, at least with the SSD I can just slot it in once I get it so it's not a big deal getting one later you know :P  Also, typical post service! Said it was arriving yesterday but it turns out it's coming today instead! Just when I had to go to a doctors appointment as well!

Again though, even without the SSD drives you guys don't realise how much of a difference just having this 8 core processor is going to make to me :P
