Title: Scrypt asic suggestions?
Post by: T0urist on November 30, 2014, 06:13:21 AM
Hi i'm looking to get an asic for mining altcoins mainly dogecoin. This isn't for a profit or anything. I'm in a sharehouse where i don't pay electricity but more or less want to just do it for fun. Maybe spend around $400-$800. Anyone got any suggestions on the asic front what would be the best to buy? Just want bang for buck for something reliable.

Not chasing some giant box the size of a large computer tower or 1-2ru network slot.

Thoughts or links?

Hi - seems the best thing out there is this:

HASHRA ASTRO - 100 MH/S - 600 WATTS +- 10% - 28nm CHIP - $450 - FREE SHIPPING

http://shop.lifeforce.info

He is taking pre-orders, but your risk is very little as Paypal is accepted.  Lifeforcepools (member on here) is well respected.

I've got an order in for two myself (as you get a discount for larger quantities).

Just wait until the chip die shrink from 22nm to a smaller size, maybe 16nm. Then the power efficiency per hashrate will be have better yield then current ones.

When will this happen?  Seems like we're stuck on 28nm for Scrypt miners.

I'm alittle confused on the 20nm chips.  KNCMiner "did" or "did not" successfully release a bitcoin miner with these chips?

I'm seeing products from unknown companies out there for Bitcoin mining at supposedly 20nm -- but all of these products look like vaporware…

Also - from what I've read -- 16nm still has a ways to go in efficient yield or something like that?

I dunno - would love to hear from someone that is current with the chip manufacturing process.

I know that you said that you're not looking for something large, but for that kind of money you're not looking at a tiny unit unless you buy a ton of blizzards or gridseed pods, and at that point you're back up to a large device, just in a bunch of smaller pieces and now it's not as fast as a single larger unit for the money.

I have a couple g-blacks left if you're interested:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=874711.0
