Post by: Madness on December 05, 2014, 03:34:57 PM
This question is just for educational purposes ;D just want to know how to recover it just in case.

I own the username , Password , email of my account . but I see that some people have those informations and are unable to recover their account , why is that ? what else should we provide , and what's that "PGP" sig or whatever and where to get it ? :o

thank you guys

The account is lost. Why? Actually there is a way to verify that you are the owner with signing a Bitcoin address / PGP key that you used here.

An advantage of Public and Private Keys is, that you can sign your Public Key with the help of your Private Key. This means that you can sign a message like "This is my address" with your Keypair. This helps to verify that you are the owner of a private / public key.

You can sign online on Blockchain.info or offline on Bitcoin-Qt, Multibit and much more.

You can get a free PGP app from https://gnupg.org and you can get the guide from https://www.gnupg.org and http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17226598 . For BTC, see brainwallet.github.io/#sign for signing and you can also test with the private key in the wallet ; https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/3898/how-does-sign-message-work

Don't worry, it's important that everyone knows about cryptography.

And, when you generate a PGP key or BTC address, send a signed message from your account to DefaultTrust user [1], this will help you to recover your account if it is lost or stolen. :)

If your account is hacked and the hacker changes your email and password, the only thing you can do is send proof that you own a bitcoin address tied to your account to theymos (usually one that you have put in an old post). This is done by using the message signing feature of your bitcoin client, which allows you to put an unforgeable digital signature on a message that proves it came from the owner of a specific bitcoin address. But theymos is a busy guy and doesn't do many of these requests, so most people just make new accounts.
