Just in case anyone needs a reminder, Microsoft is the 3rd largest company in the world (by market-cap), and more than 10x larger than the prior biggest bitcoin-accepting company (Dish Network, at $32B).

Has the rally begun?  If so, where does everyone think it's headed?  I'm going to come out and say:  if this is it, and I hope it is, we're going to $6,000 coins, followed by a collapse down to $2,000 or a little less.

This is what happens after every big news pop... I just cashed out & started opening shorts... I made a shit load of money shorting the paypal pop & I think the same is possible here.

Big companies accepting bitcoins hardly made wonders for bitcoin price recently, isn't it?

in future we will see more big merchants looking into bitcoin as payment option

The biggest company to accept bitcoin until Microsoft was Dish Network at a market-cap of $32B. Microsoft is the 3rd largest company in the world, with a market-cap over 10x Dish's, at $391B.

Regardless of what happens in the short-term (and it could be anything, including a pop-n-drop), my thoughts on the longer term ramifications:

There haven't been any big companies accepting bitcoins yet, not "big" by microsoft standards anyway!   They are one of the biggest companies in the world!

They will when they figure out the real benefits, such as saving millions of dollars a year in processing fees and all sales are final (irrereversible transactions)  and such minor details like that :)

This isn't a good this with the current way they get paid (USD)


It actually has a huge negative effect on the price for many reasons... This high pop we got to $360ish~ because of this news is going to hurt even more tomorrow morning

Microsoft is not accepting Bitcoin for Microsoft products. Microsoft is only accepting Bitcoin for Microsoft partners who sell through Microsoft's online store system. From the Microsoft page:  "You can only use Bitcoin to add money to your Microsoft account and then purchase digital goods at select Microsoft online stores. You can’t use Bitcoin to purchase Microsoft products and services directly at this time."

So why would they do that if bitcoin is so good or if Gates really liked it that much... Why aren't they invested in it or at least buying some???
If there was the slightest chance we could hit $1,000+ per coin again don't you think they would buy some? Don't you think the government would have held on?
Maybe all these people already know the end is here... Maybe that's why that ETF is not coming out in its current form.

Either way it doesn't matter, the fact Microsoft is associating itself with Bitcoin at all adds credibility, and - over time - is going to pique interest from a broader audience. I don't know if we'll see a huge rally now. That depends if speculators want to pump it. But long-term this is very healthy for Bitcoin.

Do you think this pop has popped? Like, I'd definitely want to do the same thing, but up 25 on this news seems... seems light. Like I'd expect more pop? This shit is definitely going down in the big scheme... but where is the rest of the pop?

This is big. Microsoft is one of the largest company in the world and they are slowly accepting bitcoin. The next big one should be Apple.

It has overshooted, and even if this is the start of a week of uptrend it has to come down a bit. Or it can also be a fricking bull trap. Safer thing to do then is shorting (but don't fall in love with that). Incidentally, that is not what most will do after this movement - this is another confirmation for me usually, i'm a bit of a contrarian. 10% here, 10% there and we earn ourselves a very merry christmas - and you go home after a hard day of trading with the satisfaction of having helped the price discovery process. A casino won't get a lot of new customers, just because the grocery store on next street started to accept their chips as direct payment.

Bitcoin is a gimmick for payment and the main attraction lies in speculation. So, news of new payment opportunities always have little effect. That's the hard truth about bitcoin and merchant adoption.

Merchant adoption, even if they convert from bitcoins to dollars is all about the amount of time Bitcoin is held thanks to them accepting bitcoins.

If 365 people use one bitcoin that goes from dollars to bitcoin back to dollars over the course of one day, that is the equivalent of one person holding 1 bitcoin for the whole year.

The longer the period, the more people, the less bitcoins available for people on the exchange, the higher the price.

When there was only one option...a pizza, it was such a small portion of the whole bitcoin supply that 10,000 bitcoins were required for the transaction. If there are a large amount of merchants accepting and requiring bitcoin to be held for slightly longer amounts of time, the less the supply for people who want to buy.

This "good" bit of news means we're going sub 300 by next week. A huge dump is incoming.

It makes the same amount of sense to use bitcoin for payment, then it is to go to a casino and convert your dollars to casino chips, so you could use them at the grocery store that accepts them as direct payment.

Paying with bitcoin makes sense if: a) You are already fanatical about bitcoin b) You need to make a black market purchase.
For the rest it's inconvenient, unsafe and often expensive.

This is great news from MS. It's the same thing Paypay does; this is just a start-up/testing fase. It will bring Bitcoin not to the moon....yet. It can take 1 to 2 years before they rolling it out on a global scale.
