Title: What do you think of coinbase.com?
Post by: tahji on December 12, 2014, 07:29:21 PM
Hi Everyone,
I am a new enthusiast of bitcoins. I would just like your review on https://www.coinbase.com/. How long does it take? is it reliable? Should I purchase it from here and how much identifications do I need?

Coinbase is the  most trusted exchange.  I would give them an A+

Coinbase is excellent I have been with them for a year and a half now. Support helped with the very few issues I did have but otherwise I can buy and sell bitcoin almost instantly and have many times. The online wallet is also secure and works great to store my bitcoin.

I dislike coinbase, they were assholes and had many problems a while back, idk if they still do things like stall sending bitcoims to their buyers until the price of bitcoin went up.  I like to use this forum as an online exchange. :)

No doubt. It is my first and last choice for 100% Security of my btc funds. I always prefer to deposit some btc in coinbase vaults.

Is blockchain selling bitcoin now? I think OP was asking if it is safe to purchase bitcoin from coinbase not asking about wallets.

They are pretty good now, solid A. In the early days, they were in surviving mode, no good then.

it's one of the best bitcoin exchanges for US based customers as you can easily and conveniently buy/sell bitcoins for bank/creditcard with it. as far as I know they do need some identification.

CoinBase is good trading platform, but there is not ANY trusted or reliable website on the internet. Are you remember Mt. Gox or MintPal?  ;)

Thank you everyone for sharing. :) Hahaha I was asking about the coinbase to exchange. I am using green adresss as a wallet or blockchain info and also trying to learn about securing my keys.

There are some huge differences Coinbase is US based and deals with fiat not like Gox which was more of an exchange. Coinbase has liability and it will be held accountable since they are a US registered business. Also the idea of Coinbase going under is very very unlikely unless bitcoin collapses completely. Remember coinbase and bitpay have huge accounts like tigerdirect, dell, overstock, and now microsoft.

Coinbase reserves the right to cancel your buy before it completes.  Most large transactions require a waiting period of a few days, but once you're verified and have an old enough account, you can get smaller amounts of bitcoin instantly.  I just made a buy that is over the instant-buy limit, so I asked them some questions.  Their answer was mostly a "please don't ask us that" kind of answer, but my questions were designed to handle that answer.  Here is our exchange through the support site and emails:

Quote from: My support request
Is a pending transaction susceptible to cancellation until it is completed?
Do the chances of a transaction completing go up as the few days during which it is pending go by? Is most of the risk analysis done early during the pending period, or is it done at an essentially random time before the due date?

Quote from: David T at Coinbase Support
Unfortunately we're unable to share our security processes at this time. All transactions are processed to ensure the safety and security of all users.

What this tells me is that the answers are:
  • YES, pending means susceptible to cancellation.
  • NO, the chances are the same until it is completed.
  • It is done at an essentially random time before the due date.

I have alerted Coinbase support of this thread in case my representation isn't accurate so that they can clarify here.
