It was just a matter of time.

There's an article on cryptocoinsnews:

Horrible Bosses 2 Features Bitcoin Cameo

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/horrible-bosses-2-features-bitcoin-cameo/ (https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/horrible-bosses-2-features-bitcoin-cameo/)

Quote
While preparing to launch the scheme, the three friends reconnect with Motherf—er Jones (Jamie Foxx), a seemingly street-wise character who spent ten years in prison for recording movies illegally. Jones uses his black market connections to buy prepaid cell phones, which the friends intend to use to communicate with the father of their now-complicit captive. How does Jones know the cell phone purchase was untraceable? He paid with “Bit Coins,” of course. However, Jones simply mentions the transaction in passing; the audience does not see him make the Bitcoin purchase.

Interesting, might this actually give Bitcoin extra exposure to non-tech people?

Let's hope the Bitcoin part won't get blurred or beeped out in some countries.

I doubt this by itself will help. People who don't know what Bitcoin is won't go looking just because of this. Especially for non-tech people, who will assume it's just some nerd thing. Censorship is the least of Bitcoins' problems.

That's not how it works. You probably won't go and research what the bitcoin is because of the single mentioning in some comedy movie. But if you hear/see bitcoin references from different sources, over long period of time, that builds the awareness. You never show any interest in researching bitcoin, but you're aware (to some degree) what it is and how it works anyway. That's always a good thing.

Besides, the context in which it is mentioned is more "criminal-underworld"tone rather than nerd/techie type thing.

Good news indeed! Even movie directors now acknowledge bitcoin existence. Hope to see some high-budget movie been made specially that focuses solely on bitcoin. I'm not talking about documentary series, I'm talking about a full-fledged movies by top actors or actresses.

I hope this doesn't looks bad  :-[. Good news that BTC was featured in a movie but criminal using it to buy untraceable goods, thats not how I would like to describe it to people.

The way it was mentioned was not really in a good way but the movie was very funny and has mass appeal, it was said by Jamie Foxx in the movie.

The fact that Bitcoin remains fungible for both legal and illegal uses is precisely what give it credibility as a currency. If you couldn't buy a hooker and 8ball of coke to snort it off her ass with the old greenback than USD fiat wouldn't be a serious currency with any credibility.

For people interested in other instances, there was a whole episode or two with bitcoin as the main theme in the 'good wife' tv show. What was interesting was that it was done in 2009, very pre cool of them.

I really don't get it why you guys are so excited about this. That scene didn't exactly portrays bitcoin in positive light,in fact in deepen the stereotype that   bitcoin is a criminal underground currency( not exactly favourable context).Heck,it's barely a second exposure with no clarifying whatsoever or even further mentioning for the rest of the movie.

A criminal talking about buying  a jailbroke(I hope he's a talking about the phone, how do you jailbroke bitcoin?) untraceable phone to mask other illicit activity doesn't sound like ringing endorsement to me(its at best shady at best) .So we're rejoicing because they didn't portray it as bad as they could(they need to make Jamie's character likeable or at leas tolerable, after all) ? Hey at least he wasn't trafficking  cocaine or hiring a hitman with it ::)

it doesn't strike me as bad. It's clear that it's anonymous. I think it's awesome exposure! The slight pause makes the word more noticeable, and it is used as part of the story line, drawing just enough attention to it.
"Prepaid with gold coins" / "prepaid with bitcoins" - nice. I like it!

By affirming to the ignorant suspicion that bitcoin is an anonymous payment system used by the underworld to circumvent detection?

"Anonymous" isn't exactly something that most people cares as much as the ones who frequent this forums do(besides, bitcoin isn't exactly anonymous). The fact the line was spoken by an outlaw pretty much means they're trying to invoke an  underworld connotation .While it may not exactly be a bad (they could do it a lot, lot worse)it may just draw enough attention for audience to conclude that it a "criminal thing" without bothering to look it up.Perhaps if a different type of character(nerd, political activist, fringe economist etc) saying might be less jarring to me.

I'm more interested in the  tv's show context ,though.Too bad we don't air that show here.Anyone can provide a summary of that episode?

For all intensive purposes, using bitcoin is anon. This is especially true for smaller transactions.

Unfortunately bitcoin is used by criminals to hide their identity (although there are many other uses for it as well)

C'mon these films aren't that bad. Could be worse. Give it a year or two and I'm sure we'll see bitcoin being mentioned more prominently or maybe even a film based around bitcoin (or at least heavily featured).

Good to see Bitcoin get more mainstream mentions in movies, TV, news, and media.  Now if we can somehow get a huge blockbuster Marvel movie, James Bond movie, or dedicated episode on like The Big Bang Theory...that would be even better.

That could be interesting. I agree that the more exposure the better, but I think better results could come from targeting a more willing audience. Anyone want to phone the guys of the big bang theory and pitch an episode plot? :)

I don't think it would be that difficult to get BBT to mention bitcoin, but it surely will be costly.
Notice they've got shitload of product placements in their series.

Speaking for myself, I never got excited about the Good Wife episode, as I've never seen any of GW episode. And have likely heard of GW because it was mentioned on bitcoin forum, not the other way around.

It's not that big of a news (meaningless compared to Overstock, Dell, PayPal news), but afaik it's the first BTC reference in the multi-million production, so just another 'milestone' crossed. That's all.

I think this is just an example that bitcoin is becoming something something that most people will recognize when mentioned in pop culture. Horrible Bosses 2 does shine somewhat of a negative light on bitcoin so I don't see this being particularly positive for bitcoin (although not particularly negative either)

i dont think that the movie is suppose to be the media bomb to create a speculative jump in price. i treat it as just a mile stone and a beginning of bitcoin entering everyday conversation.

the movie itself is not the big thing, bitcoin being mentioned is not the big thing. i only pointed it out as being the FIRST mention of it in any multi-million dollar production. and it wont be the last.

alot of people thought that dell wouldnt be accepting bitcoin in 2014
alot of people thought that paypal wouldnt be accepting bitcoin in 2014
alot of people thought that microsoft wouldnt be accepting bitcoin in 2014

so in many peoples eyes, the beginning of mainstreaming is maybe going to be happening before the 2016 block reward halving, rather than after..
