Title: [Review] SP20 Spondoolies by Dabs
Post by: Dabs on December 18, 2014, 08:30:51 AM
Ok. I didn't ask for it, but one day I got an email that said "Want a unit?" ? So of course I said yes. Okay, so maybe I asked for an older unit a few months back, but only one went out, and that didn't go to me, so I forgot about it.

If I remember correctly, Guy did not even ask for a review. I did not even notice the threads as I have not been reading these forums lately due to the coming holidays. But when I looked around, I saw all these other people receiving units, and doing reviews, and I thought, maybe I should do the same.

Anyway, I got the unit a few days ago, had to pay some minor duties and taxes to the DHL delivery people.

Here are preliminary pictures.

I'm trying to dig up my cables and power supplies, I still have a 1000 watter so I'll go try that, probably this weekend. Or tonight.

To be continued ...

It's not for sale. Yet. I do have to keep my end of the deal and that's a proper review.

Here's the update so far, I turned it on. It was really noisy. I had to turn it off as it would disturb everyone (it's night time in my house.) I'll turn it on again tomorrow. Maybe I can do something with the settings to lower the fan speed.

I plugged in the power, I connected it to my home network. I turned it on. The lights started blinking, and the fan sounded like a small vacuum cleaner, or hair dryer. I do not have a decibel or sound meter, but it was loud. Then the fan turned off momentarily. After a few more seconds, the fans turned on again and went like that for a minute. Then I turned it off.

Now, I didn't have time to configure it or have it hash to a pool or an account or anything, I simply turned it on. I have a watt meter so I'll go plug that in tomorrow

As for market value, I've had several offers for 2.5 BTC by PM and Email. But, I also made a promise to someone else, that if I got a SP35 Yukon, I'd let them buy it from me after I review it and run it for a week.

This is looking good, Waiting for the rest of the review, I was always a bitmain person, I like the low power option, Is it selectable or do you have to tweak? Would like your opinion on noise too.

Might nab some if they are good for my needs/space

Super easy to type it in. Hit the miner's webpage and adjust the "Maximum Voltage (0.580-0.790)" down a few hundredths. The noise is significant, but I don't mind it because I don't stay in the same room as the miners.

See I prefer a Pre-set GUI like the CCD, I would have to open one up and find out where temp sensors were and mess about with fan settings, What if someone was to put in an incorrect number by accident, Would it overheat, cause chip damage?

The noise is fairly important for me, I cant run the big beasts Y-35 due to home power usage, I have had a Lekky put in another dedicated ringer, I got quite a few S3's on it, All ways looking for better GHs to W ratio  ;D

EDIT - I think this unit is not for me, I have finished reading all the reviews people have put up (so far) and found minor irritations to me personally (OCD!), Still interested in what Dabs has to say.

No, when the temp starts getting too high, it downclocks. In fact the default settings are too high for most people and it downclocks for just about everyone. The manual settings are really there for when you want to slow it down on purpose, such as using a small PSU or maximizing efficiency.

Stats so far:

Fan Speed

*edit* It died a few minutes later. I think the PSU can't power it at that low fan speed or something. I'll have to bring in my other PSU.

Ok. I set it to 15 fan speed. When it reboots, the fans go at 100% or something. Then turns off. Then on. Then it goes to 15%. Interesting.

Can I ask you : how much do you pay for electricity * kWh ? I've also another question ( If I can ask  :D)  ~ How much btc do you mine/day ?  Thanks for the attention.

Electricity here is about PHP 13 per KWH. That translates to about USD 0.30 per KWH.

I don't know how much this will mine, but if it does 1.23 TH, then we can predict 0.01568 BTC per day OR almost half a bitcoin per month. However, I'm solo mining. I might do 25 BTC if I get lucky.

that is expensive electric, mine is not far below that, however.
i think we are all just hoping that BTC price does something exciting pretty soon.

= 0.49414999493476 w/gh - sounds more plausible.

When you say "at the wall" you mean using an external watt meter?

Here's a pic:

Here's an update, I upgraded to latest firmware 2.5.57 and tried some more undervolting. At 0.59, some chips refused to start working, or would turn off after half an hour. So I just used 0.6, bumped up the fans to 100% and let it run for a few hours, then took pictures of the watt meter.

That's 321.7 watts, at the meter.

Using the first GH/s number I get 0.4263016312630031 watts / ghs.
Using the 5 min number (which changes often) I get 0.3698067300594567 watts / ghs

The asic page reports the following:

Considering that it is placed in a backroom and I live in a tropical country, I think I have achieved some pretty impressive numbers. All I need now is for Santa to take me to the North Pole and we'll see how much this thing can crank out.

My second 1000 watt PSU is on stand by, I may do an overclock (turbo) test later and see how high I can get this time.

he did new firmware and tried keeping it cooler with high fan.

I have found if you cool the gear down in a cold room watts drop a lot.  I am running 6 in my attached  garage  and room is  86-90f  .. when I open the back door of the garage and drop temps by 10f  watts drop a lot.

Getting under .4 watts a gh with a cold room heavy underclock high fan is possible.

I no longer make wagers but I think the sp20   will beat the s-5 on min. watts per gh.
I also think the s-5 will be able to under clock into a very quiet setting that beats the sp20.

I can get the sp20 to do a fan at 10 in a colder room.  I have 1 unit in a colder room .  gets 480 watts for 1028gh = .467 per gh uses a plat seasonic 760 watter.

But he's not running it in a cold room. His intake is around 30c.

I just changed the volts on the settings page.

I set the fan to 20% and rebooted it. It's now only consuming 309 watts at 0.6 volts hashing 752.7 GH/s. 0.41052212 watts / GH/s.

Let me take a picture of my current setup.

I will keep it at 20% during the night, as the miner is near the bedroom.

Yeah, it's getting hotter. But I can live with that.

Veggy Crate used to house a motherboard with 5 slots, 5 risers, and 5 GPUs. Or rather there were two crates stacked on top of each other. I have pics in another thread.

I still have the risers, even some brand new ones and several of the GPUs. Sapphire 270X. Can't seem to sell them unless I drop the price to half or something.

I think a SP31 can fit on top of the veggie cart. :)

That might be the problem. Your watt meter is wrong.

Look at the board wattage: 81+85+81+89 = 336
Wall watt meter: 307

Your watt meter is reading lower wattage than the boards (which are after the power supply losses). In other words, your PSU is 110% efficient. I need to get me a lot of those PSUs!!!

Wall watt meter: 307

Your watt meter is reading lower wattage than the boards (which are after the power supply losses). In other words, your PSU is 110% efficient. I need to get me a lot of those PSUs!!!

The OMNI units are generally pretty well calibrated ..

You can test it with marked bulbs .. as in the youtube movie above and apply corrections if necessary.

@wh00per, I'll try that marked bulbs technique. I have another meter with my brother, he uses it to check on his appliances. However, I don't think all bulbs read as they say on the label. They are always off by a few percent and I'll have to check if they are consistent.

I replaced all my incandescent bulbs with compact flors, and then replaced those CFLs with LEDs.

If you have 2-3 bulbs is enough .. What you need to see is that if there is a 10% measurement error in accuracy as Syke says, or it's close to the advertised one of 0.2%.

The board measurements might be a little off too ..

Locking this thread.

The fastest I got the miner with two 1000 watters (reading 545 each or 1090 watts total) was 1588 GH/s (I saw it briefly go to 1610 GH/s then it backed down as it got too hot. Temps went up to about 80. Ran it over night.
