Title: Why so difficult to buy bitcoins
Post by: SmkeTester on December 18, 2014, 01:16:03 PM
They want to know my income, how much money I have, and they want me to upload my passport.

Why?

I am not asking for credit or anything like that, I just want to buy bitcoin using cleared funds.

Who is asking for this information? How are you trying to buy BTC (WU / MG, paypal, skrill, cash deposit)?

What  pay method u use?

Bank transfer, credit card or paypal.

Having said that, I do understand the problem with paypal i.e. charges backs etc.

If you're using Localbitcoins, they ask for such info indeed because of things like chargebacks etc.. Even credit cards can be charged back from your bank, so they need to have your information in such cases.

It's it part of the KYC (know your customer) policy. It is basically a government requirement most of the time. I think exchanges are receiving far too much confidential information than they need. That us why I sometimes buy from anonymous bitcoin ATM.

Licensed exchanges has to answer the government when they're asked, which is why they have to document every buy and sell.

The short answer is fiat. Bitcoin does not have rules about identity, but when you mix bitcoin with fiat then all the rules of money apply. Remember that you do can not own dollars. They are not your property but you have the right to use them for transactions. However, using dollars comes at the price of your identity.

Easy to do chargeback with credit card might be one reason and bitcoin is kind of anonymous so they probably want make sure who they are dealing with. A lot of fraud I can imagine, just ask around and see how many sellers that use ebay have been ripped off by fraudulent buyers using paypal (chargeback or give BS reason to reverse payment).

Virwox won't ask you about anything but they have huge fees, so can't recommend them :D

Not all sites ask for that information. Only sites like Circle requires it.
You could just use smething like localbticoins to make your purchase.
