Title: Tribler the offers bittorrent anonymity that is "impossible to shut down"
Post by: alani123 on December 18, 2014, 05:55:41 PM
From an article on Torrentfreak:
[...]researchers at Delft University of Technology have released the first version of their anonymous and decentralized BitTorrent network. "Tribler makes BitTorrent anonymous and impossible to shut down," lead researcher Prof. Pouwelse says.

Their website:
www.tribler.org (http://www.tribler.org)

It's also open ource:
https://github.com/Tribler/tribler

And there's also an invitation for researchers to help create a censorship-free Internet:

What are your thoughts?

Well it was about time that someone made something like this. I've been waiting for it for quite some time now.

Quote
Do not put yourself in danger. Our anonymous download feature is not yet broadly tested.
I guess we will have to wait a while..

There are some others out as well. I like the concept but Tribler doesn't work very well for me, I deleted it yesterday after trying it for a week or so. Among the problems I have had:
Freezing my system
No options when I right click a file
When choosing 'Minimize to Tray'  There is no way to open it from the tray. Maybe a keystroke shortcut, but without a way to open things with a mouse, or even offering the options, it is not for me
The anon automatic thing it does to prove itself never completed and usually would freeze the system

It looks like it is anon if you stay within their network?

I did try it as well. I can't speak about technical details but download speed seems to go down as you increase anonymity. Probably the anonymity feature could be more usefull later on if more people get to use their software.

Well that was expected IMO. Yes, the speed should pick up a bit later. We will see how they progress.

Are their games on it and do they accept Bitcoin? :D I need to take a closer look at this one, going to try it out and see what happens.

Wait this is independent from the other torrents? I though I could download any torrents with it.

You can... It can be used as a normal client. But from what I understand there are certain benefits amongst it's users like being able to use their network for anonimity while downloading torrents.

I'm not sure what Lethn is talking about.

Ah sorry, I meant if there were any limits to the type of files that can be uploaded and so on and I was talking about them accepting donations, I need to look into how this works better but it looks like there are at least a lot of movie files on there already.
