Title: How Dangerous Is Cashing out Starbucks Cards?
Post by: SvenskViking on December 19, 2014, 06:58:28 AM
I have been cashing a few in already.

Apparently they might have been done using a stolen card because the balance disappeared (Al tho that might not be because they are stolen). He told me that they are his but I don't believe him. What are the odds of me getting into trouble for this realistically?

What method are you using for 'cashing them out'? You mean you're accepting them for btc? Most of these cards are bought with stolen credit cards and it's usually the people who create them by fraud that they will go after, not the little guys, but keep doing it and over time the possibility of getting in trouble somewhere down the line will rise.

I don't have an actual experience in this so this is confirmed information or anything but if it's done in person/store without you giving too much details (mainly address) I suppose there is no issue, and even if they were used for a delivery/website order I doubt it would matter for small amounts, Again for such a delicate problem you should check in a lawyers forum (for your country) or something...

You can always tell them it was gifted to you. I don't think any legal action would be taken,
but the balance might become zero.

Oh, if he's worried about using them at Starbucks I don't think he has to worry. I don't think a SWAT team is going to ambush you as soon as you use a dodgy one  ;D. Worse thing that'll happen is it gets declined. If they ever ask for your name just don't give them it.

Is it worth it to commit a felony crime to save a few dollars?

You will likely never get in trouble for it, but the damages if you do get caught are devastating. Considering your apparent lack of knowledge on how to do something like this safely, I don't think the dangers outweigh the legal risks for you.

I'm pretty sure prison doesn't have very good coffee.

How are you "cashing them in"?  ???

I do agree with Bitcoins101.

Don't risk it just for a couple of dollars. It's not worth it.

It's not worth it. Probably you got cards that were bought with stolen credit cards. You'll probably not get arrested or something but you'll be asked to give your personal info and stuff. Just don't!

Say that it was a gift or something and leave the place as soon as possible. Keep in mind that these places are full of surveillance cameras, too, so don't get in trouble (making a scene).

Yeah, I have always been wary of buying giftcards from those sites that offer discounts, many of them are likely bought fraudulently.

If they are giving huge discounts like 70-80% yes they have been bought from card skimming, though some are selling through starwood reward program but their price is 50% (though don't know if starwood acc had used fraud cards)
But i don't think you will go in much risk , i buy them now and then to re-sell and make a lil profit .
