53 connections here.

PS: If you want more than 8 connections you have to use UPnP or configure port forwarding (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=64009.0).

>50 without port forwarding.  ( :D I use lots of addnode commands from http://blockchain.info/connected-nodes :D)  With more connections your transactions are spread throughout the network faster, and you get the latest transactions and blocks sooner.  So it really isn't necessary unless you are mining, but it's still nice for the average user.

Around 40-50 usually.  I lose them if I have to restart, then they slowly come back over the next 24 hours or so.

That's bad.  You're using connections that other users could be using.  How about opening up a port instead.  That way you help improve the network rather than harming it.

I had 800 back when we were playing into block races in our MMC pool.

8 is likely the max you will get without doing some tweaking.

I am running through Tor and can't use port forwarding without losing anonymity. :-\  I realized >50 was quite a lot and purposely lowered it before you posted.  ;)  I've more than done, and continue to do, my share in improving the Bitcoin economy and network. 8)

8 here not forwarding ANYTHING.

Have better things to do than seeing my balance emptied by some bugs.

And you think it's easier to exploit that bug when ppl are connecting to you instead of you connecting to them? Must be a really special bug

Possible faster transactions
Possible better protection against double spends
Offload other nodes in the network (by allowing incoming connections)
