Title: Bitcoin wasn't hacked -
Post by: JPage on January 06, 2015, 04:19:57 PM
Everyone (the press / media) acts as if Bitcoin was somehow hacked.  Bitstamp is a private company which buys and sells bitcoin and they left their keys in a place where crooks found them.  There is nothing wrong with the key - the key is very strong.  The quality of the key isn't the problem.  The hiding place was crap.  Don't leave your freaking keys out where thieves find them!!!!

Bitcoin wasn't hacked!!! (yet!)

Well when people not too involved with bitcoin see news like this, they imagine that everyone lost their coins and the whole bitcoin thing was hacked, just like mtgox.

Well, technically, quantum computers could break the code without requiring astronomical amounts of energy :

https://theconversation.com/quantum-computers-could-crack-existing-codes-but-create-others-much-harder-to-break-21807

Previous discussion here :
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122591

And I guess advances in mathematics could in theory make SHA256 more easily breakable in classical ways?

Though the BitCoin network might be able to switch to a longer key or maybe even to a stronger cryptographic algorithm if there was a risk of SHA256 being compromised?

P.S.: It seems that the media (in general) will never learn the difference between the bitcoin network and specific private bitcoin companies...

Bitcoin is impossible to hack!

True enough although that does not mean that services can't be hacked
Or reused R keys that make the sun image a 2 second hack cough

Or Bitcoin is being used as a mechanism to hack other things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_table).

Yes and No. At current rate it will take the whole network to perform the feat so I think you are right that the key is probably there for the taking. In years to come probably the scenario would change so computer technology advances

*Sigh* When will exchanges/companies learn? MtGOX(supposedly), Inputs, and many others...but still they are not securing their systems?

There's no such thing as absolutely hack-proof security as long as you're connected to the Internet. And any bitcoin-related activities are an extremely tempting target due to how easy bitcoins are to move around. So bitcoin companies have to consider the risk of hacking as a function of money spent on security.
And while we don't have all the information yet, suggesting BitStamp is just as bad as MtGox seems to be a wild exaggeration to me.

So, it's my turn to quote it. I just love this image. Bitcoin won't be hacked in our lifetime.

hopefully its not related but couple weeks prior to bitstamp hack my withdrawals became disabled. I asked support whats going on they told me that my company is delinquent. Even us bank allows me to use my money but bitstamp wont..Hell with them. NOw i cant even close my account with them as it requires withdrawing all the money
