Title: Decentralization is Inevitable
Post by: hector3115 on January 08, 2015, 11:29:46 AM
At first I thought Gems was an interesting idea, but if they had any success, value transfer would be adopted by whatsapp and that would be it for Gems and then lights out, party's over.

But then I realized that what gems has that whatsapp can never have is decentralization. The users are who gets paid for increased adoption an the users are paid for advertising.

This is why I believe that Gems is unstoppable and inevitable.  And this has re-energized me on bitcoin in general because eventually everything that can be decentralized definitely will be at some point.

It is the path of least resistance.  Gems is the gateway that can demonstrate the power of decentralization to the masses.

Gems?  Gems?  Never heard of it.

Let me google.  Oh, you mean Gems (http://getgems.org/) as discussed in this coindesk article (http://www.coindesk.com/gems-bitcoin-app-lets-users-earn-money-social-messaging/).

I've still barely heard of it.  But I wish it luck anyway.

Same here, that article defiantly has me intrigued though, hmmm time to do some research.

EDIT:
Quote
Gems will soon be available for both iPhone and Android users
That article was published on OCT 29, 2014

Still no app....?

The android app Getgems messenger is available on Google PLay.  The Apple version was delayed I guess, but hopefully available soon.  I downloaded it, it works great.

Is this topic about Gems?

As far as Bitcoin is concerned, people consider a level of centralization inevitable in mining, due to economies of scale.
You already see that in mining pools.

Decentralization is the future. People would rather own something that is run by the people for the people, then something that can easily be censored or halted by an opposing force. I find myself drawn more towards p2p applications then I do for centralized ones.

I agree, I'd rather use something that is decentralized.  Inevitable though? No.

*People* will go with what is cheaper, easier to use, most effective, in that order.  Maybe somewhere further down in that list is decentralization.

Well not really. You can find shoes way chearper than Nikes, yet you see kids and adults loving Nikes, to give an example.
Only these that can't afford it by any means go with cheaper. If it's well marketed, people will drop the money.

These are the only Gems we should ever be talking about ever:

Decentralize all the things!
We need to build the layers to make decentralized development possible - it starts with infrastructure that can support Dapps, DAO's, and DACs

True decentralization relies on a distribution of servers and networks, much like the Bitcoin Blockchain.

Here are some projects doing this today:
Ethereum
Storj
Maidsafe
Factom
