Title: CPU only coins to mine?
Post by: WaffleMaster on January 13, 2015, 09:08:25 PM
Hi guys, I was just wondering if anybody here is mining a CPU only altcoin. I have 6 hours of downtime at work each day and then it suddenly came to me, I could be mining coins during this time at work! Sure it may not be worth much, but I really enjoy mining and I always bring my laptop with me and use a VPN at work. Ever since the asic days of Scrypt my mining days are over... I want to get back in the swing of things with CPU only coins!

Coin of the Magi (XMG) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=735170.0) might be a good one ;) There are others out there which are doing pretty well for CPU (Monero e.g.), but I have no idea about their current position in the cryptoworld ^^

Coin of the Magi is the best option imo, especially for low powered devices.

Guys, you are great, usually I'm the first one who mentions Magi in such kind of threads  ;) Thanks for recommending Magi.

Indeed, Magi is a very good choice for CPU mining. With a special miner software, you can even use your notebook to mine.

Please say hello in our thread and ask if you have any questions.

Yes and no. Magi has a block reward that depends on the total hashrate. The long-term goal is, that even a simple home computer is able get a good amount of coins. Unfortunately there are some miners with big hashrate who press the block reward to the bottom. But that shouldn't be a reason to avoid Magi.

Please have a look at these statements from the developer, to get an idea of the Magi concept.

If you are looking for instant profit, go with another coin. If you believe in this concept, love the idea and support this term long-term, start mining (even with lower block rewards). There's still some work to reach the goals, but we're working hard and there is an active development for this coin.

Why not to mine some really useful?
I mean Riecoin (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=446703.0)  ;)

I mined XMR, I mined XMG, I mined DNC... now all seem to be worthless :(
Last good hit was DNC, but now price is too low...

If there is no current pump or you mine a brand new coin, ALL coin prices are down. Did you hear that BTC, LTC and nearly all other coins crashed down?
Mining is not only making quick profit. If you believe in a coin, you will make long-term profit. Did you stop mining BTC for example, when the rate went down from $1200? Magi is a long-term project, not a pump and dump coin that will die after the dev made his profits. Read the ANN thread and get an idea of the concept.

I vote for Magi also, its a cool long term project with high value regardless of coin value

I've read Magi ann much better than many. I've also translated it. You missed that :))
Right now, by chance, I mine Magi. Still... if I believe in a coin, I don't necessarely mine it. Sometimes I mine something easier to mine and buy what I want to keep.

Is mining magi more profitable than cryptonote coins?

From my tests there is at least one cryptonote coin that is more profitable to mine than Magi. But not for long, it seems....
But you know, all depends on the price and the difficulty.

Magi is currently a good choice for CPU mining imho.

...

Slimcoin is perhaps very underrated in terms of its importance in innovation in crypto currency. Slimcoin has the first known working implementation of PoB (Proof-of-Burn) block generation. It also utilizes the unique Dcrypt PoW algorithm which was designed for CPU mining and to be ASIC resistant.

The latest version of Slimcoin is available here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=613213.msg9227084#msg9227084

The Slimcoin whitepaper also makes for a very interesting read: https://slimcoin.org/images/downloads/slimcoin_whitepaper.pdf

Although an experimental GPU miner does now exist for Slimcoin, very few people are currently mining, so it is therefore possible to find some blocks with CPU. You can mine in the wallet using: setgenerate true numberofcores via help Tab > Debug window > Console Tab. Slimcoin is also listed on Bter exchange.

...

Gapcoin is a very interesting CPU mineable coin, although a GPU miner does now exist. http://gapcoin.org/ and https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=822498.0

Gapcoin is the largest know, decentralized search for Prime Gaps.

some old coins may be not that bad to mine, like chaincoin or similar

Oh really? If we want to search prime numbers, then using Primecoin.
Compare:
The Only gapcoin pool have 137 active workers right now.
One of the Primecoin pools have 4710 active workers at the same time.

But both coins heavily mined on CPU so we must come back to my previous message (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=923963.msg10218208#msg10218208)  ;)

At the risk of getting flamed, there is always Bytecent.  Its solomine only, and TBH difficulty is pretty high, but it should be included on the list.

I remember looking at slimcoin a while ago, and am honestly surprised that it survived. Maybe ill revisit it :)

As my laptop is on for work from 9 to 5, I thought it would be nice to do some Btc mining at the same time.  I ended up getting a AntMiner U2 USB gizmo.  It works while I work.  It does all the number crunching so no adverse affect on the laptop speeds.  Cost £20 off eBay.  Mined about £2 worth of Btc in 6 months.  Probably less now. ;)

not to flame you, but Bytecent is rather a scam coin organized by some p&d and known scammer(s) I would suggest to not mine that sort of coin nor give any support to their network.

I know incakoin can be stake mined , it is said 90 days 100% return just leave the wallet staking .
I keep some coins , but have not last so long to 90days .it is also can be regard as a way of CPU mining .

Yeah, and after 90 days your coins become worthless.

I think staking is better than mining
try 10k (10.000% per year) coin or MMXIV (2014% per year)

Cause you not have antminer or gridset
