This will require you to buy 5 bitcoin today.  Buy 5 bitcoin, hold them, sell them in 5 years - you will have over a million.  No problem.

I think the right answer is - in order to be a millionaire, you'll need 1 million.

I'd say the average optimist or bull, or there abouts, would presume that $5-10k a coin should be a reality during the next normal rally (ie. not like the one that happened last spring). So, place your bets on when that'll be, ya know w/ the ETFs and all the related boosting that would happen during such a time. This year, maybe, the following- perhaps more likely. Nobody knows when the next surprise factor will take place and most people aren't trying to discredit themselves nor their account here by looking at the stars and signing off on a date. We could be on the cusp of a weird upside-to sideways- to upside and again movement before going moon (see, not trying to get the future to look back negatively on me ;) ) and then whatever else. If the past was a guide and we all know how that goes, we'll get my opening statement sometime this year or next and you'll need around 100 bitcoins to reach millionaire status. But, let's face it, anyone hovering in the 5-10 coin category should be having a new standard of life if all goes well. As it stands, 90%+ of everyone here has been beat down in their soul and enthusiasm because of the last year or so, so there's obviously a skewed takeaway value that everyone is getting from reading here - and I feel real sorry for noobs looking for guidance from allegedly seasoned and skilled veterans here. That was a mouthful!

If you would be willing to wait up to twenty years, I think a dozen bitcoins would be more than enough.

Easiest answer in the book.  1 million Bitcoins!   8)

To be a Bitcoin millionaire, you need to amass 1 million BTC which would be quite a feat.

By time this occurs though, Bitcoin would become the main currency, and fiat value wouldn't matter.

If you're thinking more short term, like in the 10-20 years window, you'd probably just need 100 BTC or so.

well with the prices dramatically changing like they are you would at least have to have 6,000+ to see a semi comfortable $1,000,000 spot.

21,000,000 BTC

Amount of fiat currency from all countries in circulation 170 Trillion
USD Debt 17 Trillion
amount of dilution under QE program % of debt growing 1Trillion annually

1,000,000 is not going to buy much in 5 years...

At $200 USD per coin 5 coins per $1000, a million bucks is 1000x1000
so 5 coins would have to rise 1000X to be worth a million seems unlikely short term

$10,000 x 100x or 100,000 x 10x seems more realistic. So 50 $200 coins or 500 $200 coins might work

if the fiat currency was backed by gold, bitcoin would not be as necessary,
In a crisis the volatility is the unknown that can make you a profit.

Looking back to 2008 at 0.05 per BTC, you needed 1000 coins, held until $1000 and you would of made
$1,000,000 there is a different mining scenario now which I think requires more thought...

Inflation is when money supply creates too much price inflection, the market for BTC capitulated because the 100000 coins being auction by the fed created uncertainty, once the market knows what rice they fetch, that will be the new price range. The more users pile in at these prices the more bitcoin has growth potential. I predict the oil crash will crash the energy bond market by June by 30%, triggering bankruptcies... Bitcoin will have a good summer, the fed is stuck printing money forever.. All the bad news for stocks, oil, bonds will push people into BTC when they see the rate of acceleration and returns. this is a hiccup. Long live BTC.

That depends on how much the price would be in five years , I would say it would be 1200$ / USD or dead  ::) pretty sure that not the price of now since there would be less bitcoin in 2016 Q4 (halving block reward)

On a more speculative level, I think 500 coins should very easily turn into a million in 5 years.

I would like to say 100 and wait for 10k a piece, but I think that's unrealistic within five years but maybe when/if bitcoin goes full mainstream. I think bitcoin can hit $1000, though within the next five years.

21 bitcoins is all you need to become a $ millionare in 5 years, thats if bitcoin trebles in price every year.

initial outlay                  $4,200

2015         $600  =      $12,600
2016       $1800  =      $37,800
2017       $5400  =    $113,400
2018     $16200  =    $340,200
2019     $48600  = $1,020,600

correct me if i'm wrong

Well that's all well and good but it hasn't trebled last year - it lost more than half it's value - and has continued to crash. That being said I still think bitcoin is in its infancy so it could achieve this doubling or trebling over the next few years but I am sceptical.

Half a million btc? You do realize there's only ever going to be 21 million total? 10k is probably far fetched but remember bitcoin was 1k with practically zero adoption. Imagine what would happen if we get mass adoption and it is used frequently all around the world? Then 10k wouldn't be so ridiculous in my opinion.

Yeah - total FUD. It doesn't matter what BTC holders think it should be valued at, it only matters what price people are willing to pay at the point of purchase. Taking a guess there is only around 1 million BTC holders WORLDWIDE. Adding in current thoughts from the general population on BTC as a currency I would say you would be very lucky to have $1000 BTC in 5 years, which means you would need 1000 BTC to be a millionaire.

Depends what you mean by "the moon".  Fiat will be around in 5 years,
I absolutely guarantee it.

Even if Bitcoin is 10k, 100k, or a million, there'll still be fiat.
It would  have to go a lot higher than that to replace all fiat.

There are still communist countries forcing people to use fiat. Russia for example could make a law to put you in prison if you dare to use bitcoin

Think about how many people know about bitcoin, then how many people mine bitcoin, then how many invest in bitcoin. The numbers are very small. Bitcoin is being ruined because its being abused by the Chinese. Why am I here? The concept is brilliant. The execution by the users is poor.

Bitcoin had potential. I've used bitcoin to exchange for goods with other bitcoiners, I do not support big companies who use bitcoin as a liquid item to dump for fiat. These people ruin BTC. They don't care what the BTC is worth, they only care about how fast it can be changed over to cash. Imagine you woke up tomorrow and BTC rocketed up to $1000. The amount of dumpers will flood the market with BTC and it will fall faster than last time.

There are many skeptics and for the right reasons. I'm a skeptic but I still support the product. I'm not here for profit, I'm here to use an alternative to fiat. If I wanted to transfer $500 to a friend via the internet, it could take 3 - 5 days. Bitcoins lets me transfer an particular amount in about an hour or less depending on fees. Fees are put back into the network, not one persons pocket.

Wall Street went crazy saying Berkshire Hathaway's class A shares were overvalued when they hit $10,000 for the first time. In 2006, those Class A shares crossed over $100,000 per share. Less than 10 years later, they closed this week at nearly $225,000 per share.
With adoption and being at such an early stage with BTC, I don't see $10,000 all that far fetched after the next halving (or two). Bitcoin can (has already, to a small degree) revolutionize the payment industry with countless more utility uses. If we can stave off the ADD somewhat, the value per BTC could be beyond some of the most optimistic predictions.

Realistically, I'd say 2,500
If anyone wants to know, currently 1 million US is 5,000 bitcoins.

if we are going to put usd value to bitcoin how much do you think you would need to hold in btc to become a millionaire in the next 5 years?

Well we not know the answer for this because we just guessing here.

But holding about thousand bitcoin will be enough for your to become a millionaire.
Just hope the value will keep increase in next 5 year.

We just cannot decide the exact number, based on anything from difficulty to developments, as we just can't predict what may happen tomorrow... Either miners may stop mining, or there doesn't seem any expected developments to get achieved, so just based on interest and curiosity, the price hike may not happen... Though, I would expect BTC100 would be more than enough to become a millionaire, it's my own prediction taking the price at $10k.
